If it makes yo feel any better... Last month I was jogging with my 2 year old like I do every night as our daddy daughter time and she grabbed the wheel which sucked her out and I then proceeded to run her over with the jogging stroller!!! She didn't cry but all of the people outside saw it and I still feel bad. It was even more painful explaining to MOM the tire marks............

In reply to: That's one of my greatest fantasies -- to be able to launch a small, screaming puke sack across a room with no regard to the reprucussions. I gotta say -- I'm jealous. Regardless of the nasty stares and scornful comments, the kid was in the wrong place and was not following the rules appropriate for a climbing gym. It's called "natural consequences" and it happens all the time. He'll get over it. Let's just hope the whole group learned a thing or two about climbing gym etiquette. Ed Paragraph 1: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!

Shame you weren't wearing crampons  Kid's shouldn't be running around without supervision at climbing gyms. Kid's should be running around without supervision in the Everest icefall! The Wombat

I've had this happen to me with a young teen who had just stepped into a gym for the first time. He and I learned a couple of things. After the manager explained to him specifically not to be under someone climbing. he decided to climb next to me while i was already on my way up. He also decided to take some of my chalk from my bag i had left on the ground. as soon as he did i went falling and hit him on the head pretty hard. This is what was learned: I will never leave my chalk bag on the ground, i will forever keep it on. He learned to listen to what people tell him next time.

Yeah dude, not your fault... I had a similar experience, except much worse.... i was driving my car, and this kid ran out of no where and hit my front passanger door. because of the impact of the moving vehicle, the kid was thrown away from the car and he hit his friend that was behind him. This kid was so fat that when he landed on his tiny friend, he broke that guys arm. he himself suffered a broken arm, and twisted wrist due to the impact. My car door suffered a dent. I made my report to the police and geared up for a legal suit. The cops rulled out that it wasn't my fault and that the kid should have looked left and right before crossing the road... i can imagine my car being replaced by a lorry and that the kid had ran onto the path of an incomming lorry..... SPLAT ~ yucks.... but the moral is, that the kid never did run across the road ever again. Too bad he had to learn his lesson the hard way. But as sorry as i feel, i had to fix up my door... due to his fat arse...

I've smacked a coupla rug-rats with a flailing foot when bouldering, and I don't feel bad at all. In fact, I kinda like it. if you are old enough to be in the gym, you're old enough to learn lessons the hard way. I know that I sound like a jerk, but the average kid will not listen, and will continue to run around like an idiot until they get a Katana (the shoe, not the sword) to the head. "Help me, Senator Josh Kaufman, as I support the mandatory leash law for children under 25."

...was the rugrats mom hot? Regardless, you have nothing to feel guilty about. I take my 8 and 5 year olds to the gym, occasionally, and they know the rules...Sit on the benches in the middle of the gym while not climbing, period...any violations, I take them out of the gym out of respect to those training. Just the other Saturday, we were doing our thing, while a kids party was in full roar....one of the parents asked me how come my kids were behaving....my answer " I am their father - they listen or they go home"...shortly thereafter, I saw her drag her brat out....

top rope right? well if it was then the kid isn't supposed to run nder the rope in fron't of the belayer. I learned that in day one. it's his fault. tell the gym owner any easy way to stop the swinging out is to anchor a quickdraw at the end of the over hang and clip it to the rope, when a hand on the verticakl acent unclip it. that's what thy did at the gym i go to.

In reply to: Kid's shouldn't be running around without supervision at climbing gyms. The average birthday party at my local gym has at least a dozen kids and only two or three adults. They can't keep an eye on everyone, especially the smaller ones who are faster, and tend to climb less. The staff has their hands full making sure the adults are belaying safely (shudder). While this is annoying, I have to recognize that these birthday parties are what is keeping my gym in business, and providing the money for all the new holds we've been enjoying. Last week, I grabbed a little rug rat by the arm and yanked him out of the way just as a 200+ pound guy came crashing down from a bouldering wall. The kid would have been smushed! The kid had no idea why I grabbed him and ran away from me like I was the boogeyman. Oh well, there are no heros in the gym.

The mother was only b!tching you out because she was trying to displace the blame that she felt for not controlling her own little troll. When you are on the wall, you are responsible for your own safety, as is your belayer. Everyone else should be completely responsible for their own actions in a climbing gym at all times.

PixelGuru hit the nail on the head - you know most gyms would ban kids altogether, but that would kill the buisness. Everyone is stuck with the problem. I happen to love kids (raised - how did Ed put it - 3 of the "puke bags" - too funny Ed - i prefer "germ bags" damn things always bring home something bad) It is interesting to see the dedicated climbers with children verses the new comers with children - they do seem to wise up - or learn the hardway. Of course the Ritalin candiates might as well get used to getting kicked in the head. oh and climbobsessoin - 13 - in my book is not a Kid - but a young adult Climb on!

Little punk deserved it. I hate it when people get involved with rock climbing because they think it's going to be all fun like a party wall at Gameworks! They need to stay at a gym for a couple hours and see what the sport is all about: technique, strength, and the will to push yourself.

You've got it all wrong. Kids& bouldering go together like beer & pizza. Next time bring some duct tape....lash about 4 of them together side by side, heads opposite(kind of like building a raft). They make great crash pads. Inexpensive too. Use 6 for a maxi-pad! PS, don't forget to tape the pie hole.

GREAT SHOT!!!!!!!!! There isn't anything you could have done. If you would have yelled at the kid the mom would be pissed at you for that. If you would have asked her to tell her kid to stop she would have probably thought you were rude for thinking her kid was out of control.

unruley kids, siblings, and pets don't belong at the crag ( or the gym ). if you bring them, they are your responsibility. Climbers fall and thats just the way it is.

Yeah, climbossession, I guess you are the one exception for not getting flamed yet after a post like that! What did you say? You're 13, 5 feet tall, 80 pounds, and oh thats right... your balls haven't even dropped yet?!?! This was the coolest/funniest post I had read until I reached your post which reminded me why I don't like going to the gym. Punk kids trying to enforce the rules, while also reminding everyone else that they, who spend their lives at the gym, have sent every route, and you have not. Oh by the way... don't worry about the kid. My two year old nephew fell off the stairs the other day and stopped breathing. We all freaked out, but administered rescue breathing and the little bugger woke up after the second breath! He is always showing up with new bumps and bruises. Its just part of being a little kid, and learning general safety. I agree with the other posts in wishing that it would have been his mom and not him!
