I can tell you it is not Bullhead City Arizona!!!! 120 plus temp in the summer. Same rock as Josh just older and ready to crumble. The Colorado River is packed with so many sea-do's and drunks you can walk across it witout touching water. The winters are nice as the lakes, river empty. There is some good climbs here and you are 24 hours from just about everywhere. 8 hrs to Salt Lake, 17 hrs to the Tetons, 5 hours to the sierra nevada's, 3 to the San Fransicos, 3-4 hours for Josh.
I still say anywhere in Alaska is better than anywhere else I lived. Gotta get back there somehow.

I'll post my vote for right here in northern indiana/southern michigan. We have it all around here...worthless little 200 foot ski "resorts" on mostly man made, that still charge just as much as Breck or Copper or Keystone, no rocks for miles and miles unless you count the ones I'm always picking out of the fields so they don't screw up the corn planter. You want pollution? We got it. Gary IN isn't far, and Detroit's just a hop skip and a jump. Acid rain? Check. Worst air quality in the country? We have to rank right up there close to the top. How else may I extol the place where I am stuck?

Get me out of here!

One more for squamish.

if you have never been, visit and see for yourself. i took a trip there this summer and loved every aspect of it. it did rained the day i got there and the day i left, but for 2 weeks i barely had time to get a feeling for the climbing. i never got a chance to get on the chief, and i didnt leave the main bouldering under the chief. you could spend years climbing here and not see it all. not to mention the huge a$$ rope swings into the rivers and lakes for you rest days. mountain biking, good. hiking, good. skiing, good. climbing, good. culture, good. parasailing, good. kiteboarding, good. all the other sh!t you would have time to do, good.

Eagle River, Alaska. Why would you even have to ask?

Eagle River is awesome. I brought my wife to Alaska a couple years ago, she wasn't thrilled but knew I'd always wanted to go. One of the first places we went was back to Symphony Lake. She said "I could live here" :D :D :D 8 more years, kids are grown and we're there!

I can definitely concur with bad kitty, DC SUCKS!! Actually, I love DC as a city, but I'd be way psyched if it'd stop raining and they'd blast out one of the suburbs to expose some bedrock.

i am actually from DC, i like the city, the night life is good, good mtn. biking and hiking. the local climbing is limited and the ski/snowboarding sucks, i just cannot see driving two to three hours for a place that will only drop you a thousand feet (at most),

o' and the rain, don't get me started, it is the same in KY. there have been so many weekends when i have been planning trips only to be sabotaged by rain....

maybe we should just move back to socal............

Well, Squamish is fun, but I can't imagine living there. Yuck. It's a small town near to the metropollis of Vancouver. You would have to go to Vancouver all the time to shop or whatever because there isn't a hell of a lot in squamish, at which point you would have to deal with crossing the bridge. Not only that, but where would you work? No thanks. Sure, awsome outdoors stuff, but save if for a holiday (and try to find a time when it's not raining).

My vote is for Calgary. Medium sized city at the foot of the rockies. Jobs, Jobs Jobs. So many jobs. It's hard to find work in Vancouver, but here anybody could work. Cheap housing available depending on where you want to live. Second most number of sunlight days in North America. Winter cold spells are interspersed with Chinooks; meaning temps can rise 40 (C) overnight! Climb after work every day (we were rained out twice all last summer) daylight til 11pm. Weekend climbing days at lake louise quarzite, in the ghost river valley....anywhere you want. Ski at Lake Louise, Kicking Horse, Fortress, Sunshine, Castle Mountain. The closest of which being an hour drive. Way cheaper than whistler with no crowds (except the Lake).

One big vote for Colo-rado...
Sure, you can be climbing in 15 min out of SLC and the skiing is only 30 min away, but the rock is all choss, and the mountains are really small. Besides with the lack of beer and the only nightlife being 'mormon family home night' why would any young people want to move here...maybe its the central location to all those other cool places, like colorado, vegas, the winds, sinks, the desert...i don't know. Maybe i'm not that smart 'cause after 10 years i still havent figured it out.

Skipping the reading, I'd say:

1: Where there is a good job to pay for your habits
2: AND where there is plenty of good climbing
3: AND where your sig other will enjoy
4: AND where there is other stuff to do when not climbing
5: AND where the expensives are cheep.

Now, where in hell is this place anyway???

Lol, too funny. Climbing is 15 mintues away or closer depending on where you live in Colorado. SLC has us beat on the proximity to skiing if you are comparing to the Denver/Boulder area.

You are so very wrong. After living in Seattle for 5 years and thoroughly enjoying the climbing, skiing and hiking in the North Cascades but bumming out a little about the rain, my wife and I thought we'd try something new and headed out to SLC 2 years ago. We live for outdoor activities, have a 7 month old son and really have no need for clubbing or other hip nightlife, so we were very surprised at how let down by SLC we were. Fact is, the climbs are short, there is little solitude in the Wasatch (save mid-week in Lone Peak Cirque) and this town is boooooooring, even for career minded, professional parents like us. The conservative politics are fairly oppressive as well. The only really happy people I know here are dirtbag climbers (politics? duh...) and BD empoloyees (dream job, cheap gear, free beer at trade show).

I've been asking the same question you are "Where is the best place to live?" for years. What I've discovered is that unless you are very narrow in your needs, everyplace requires compromise to live in. Good luck.

Taking cost of living, night life, and outdoor activities, I would probably have to say Reno, NV. It is close to Tahoe without the taxes of CA, climbing at Donner, Yosemite National Park, Owens, and countless other smaller areas to climb. Tahoe is also awesome for snowboarding or skiing. I am not sure on the job availability though?? Tahoe I would imagine has jobs and it is a short commute. The weather is ok not as rainy as Squamish, but Squamish is much more beautiful. I grew up in Telluride and now it is expensive, I lived in North Lake Tahoe and it is pricey, my favorite place in the US where I lived is San Diego though longer drives but beautiful weather (expensive). Take a month and drive from San Diego to San Francisco and then across on the 80 to Reno and down the 395 you will get to see everything that way. If it is your choice it has to feel right to you. Good Luck

The problem with trying to find a place that is inexpensive to live AND has good architecture related jobs is kind of a paradox. High cost of living attracts people who want custom homes and so on. These same people don't want to live in or invest in places that are "cheap".
My wife and I are both Architects and we live in Steamboat Springs. We can't afford the 500,000 dollar average house, but neither can anyone who lives here year round.
To sum it all up I would have to vote for any small town that is in the mountians. You can live at the base of a ski area, be close to the climbing, and most small town have architecture work too. You just have to get used to making a monthly trip to the city to get your city fix. Anyhow, I would rather have a world class ski resort and great climbing at my front door than a 36 screen multi-movie-plex.

Good luck in your search.
