can anyone give me any pointers and reminders on gear i should bring that might not be so obvious. i have backpacked in the cold before and camped some but i don't know if i've ever done anything like this. i think my bag is only rated 30, too, but it might be twenty. i just don't want to get there and find out i forgot something everyone else brought. thanks! ps, stu: how much snow do you think will be on the ground? .. you can answer this after the snow finishes up tomorrow

If you're afraid your sleeping bag won't be warm enough, bring your toastiest blankie and use it as another layer inside. Just unzip the bag, lay it out flat, put the blanket in, and zip the whole thing back up. If the bag's a little too long, put a polar fleece pullover at the bottom for nice, toasty feets. Make sure your layers wick water away, and bring your hat and gloves. Polypro glove liners are nice, too, if your hands get cold, like mine do.... k.

Ya'll need to think about bringing some snow boots. I don't think NRP got much overnight, but these systems seem to keep rolling across the country. I think we'll start seeing some good climbing opportunities in between crap, as the temps warm up. But it's gonna be sloppy around camp, regardless.

SNOW BOOTS! Heck Stu, I don't even know what they look like, much less own any! Not something we get a lot of call for down here on the Mexican border! :D Around the camp I figure I'll have enough antifreeze in my system anyway! Climb On

I'll have some waterproof hiking boots with me so they should work fine! No problem with the drink holder! Might be a problem with a leak in my mouth though! 6 days and counting! Climb On

Not to rain, or snow, as the case may be, on the parade, folks, BUT... we just got 5-7 inches of snow across the region. The groundwater is at saturation levels, and the rivers are up. We are expecting snowshowers mid-week next week, followed by two days of temps in the high 40s-low 50s, then more cold temps for the weekend, and the possibility of more winter weather the following week. Welcome to Virginia/West Virginia in the late winter... this is why many of the climbers are also cavers or boaters or both. Again, I'm not dissing the Gathering.... hell, I"M still coming, and still planning breakfasts and classes, as well.... and I've got a 2wd RV that doesn't do diddly in snow or on ice! (Besides, I'm afraid to disappoint anne at this point... she knows my number....) But, word to the wise... bring yer waterproofing, bring a few good books, bring plenty of film, a chess set/checker board, and some crossword puzzles, and for gawdsake bring some good tall boots, because a MESS ain't half of what it's gonna be by the time a few dozen folks finish trompin around on this soggy ground for a week or more! Sorry to hear about the vehicle troubles one and all.... I'm crossing my fingers and hoping the Cruise Master will wait another two weeks for the tune-up and repairs....

 cold temps and snow...hell jeffe bring the tools and if we don't find ice we can drytool with warm gloves while the sporties are rubbing heat and feeling back into their numb fingers  Well I have to reply to their PM's but it appears katydid and crazylikeafawkes will be riding down with me through the night next Friday. We should get in around 8am so be ready to climb 'cause as much as I may want to sleep that is not what I will be there for  I guess this means I am committed now. I also had an offer to hit the Red next weekend, and my original plan to hit some Quebec ice had a new offer that was very tempting but.......between Jess, Katy, and Anne, if I turned them down at this stage, well, erm, like er what was that saying about a woman scorned.....times three http://216.40.249.192/...m/let_it_all_out.gif http://216.40.249.192/...m/let_it_all_out.gif http://216.40.249.192/...m/let_it_all_out.gif and that could lead to one of three fates for ME http://smilies.crowd9.com/contrib/anym/behead.gif or.... http://216.40.249.192/...e/2gunsfiring_v1.gif or..... http://216.40.249.192/...methrowingsmiley.gif at least the last one would keep me warm

I wouldn't count on ice. It's not gonna be all that cold. If it's too cold for free climbing, we can still take full advantage of PTPPete and concentrate on aid and big wall techniques. Then we'll all be ready for El Cap in May. Eh?

 Well, one more canadian out (me) and that sorta removes the aussie from the list too (martyb) ! The Mo-Mobile got dinged up when a big ole' mini-van drove into her backside, and it looks like it's gonna be a while to get her fixed up! :( It's been a rough week for cars!!! Darkside, you got room for one more?

Well, sh*tty weather or no - if the mofos hadn't screwed up the old thread we'd be way over 25K page views and still rolling. Does anyone want to start a new bb site and try to do a better job? I have the "tradclimber.com" name. Cool, eh?

Hey folks, all this gloom and doom talk of the weather really sucks! Today is the second day in three weeks that the temps are above freezing...the weather is making a turn for the better! The extended forcast is a mixture mostly sun and clouds and maybe a little rain with temps ranging from the mid 30's to mid 40's. You all committed to this gathering when you know we haven't had a winter like this in over 10 years. Quit your damn whinning and put a smile on your face and be positive! From experience it seems that when they are forcasting heavy rains from PA to NC it seems that in the Seneca area it is nice. So I am thinking that the weather is going to be more on the nicer side than bad. Just be prepared and enjoy yourself. I don't know many of you but am looking forward to meeting new friends and having a blast! REMEMBER smile :D smile :D smile :D
