I find it fascinting that in this thread, not only are the best and worst aspects of the titular subject discussed, they are also acted out, to extremes - mostly the worst. you get the lecture, and the practical scenario, as educational tools. both the ecoute', and the repete', as it were.

I didn't read the entire thread but just the first post or two, anyway...
my climbing partner is half my age and an attractive woman by anyone's standard
we operate as a team really well, my wife likes her and like all partnerships, we battle each other from time to time, mainly when one or both of us is in a "mood"
I have witnessed guys hitting on her at the crag and the gym, sometimes i'll say something, sometimes not...i leave up to her and she can handle pretty much anything but, she knows i have her back and she has mine
one thing though, the dynamic is more tricky just due more to other peoples mis-conception of our relationship, we are like most partnerships, we have our inside jokes and crack up at the same stoopid shit
i like climbing with her and she is one of only a few people who I trust to hold my rope and she is a total badass in bar fight
don't let the douche bags ruin you for mixed gender/age partnerships, each half will learn from the other and your life will be richer for it

I actually really like the fact that this eventually transitioned from male / femal dynamics to "people." Sure, there are differences, and sometimes they're fun to exploit, but in this day and age we're all pretty much responsible for ourselves. Treating seconds and leaders the same regardless of gender is probably something we can all agree on.
Fun is fun and work is work. We've all gotta do our share in order for the work / fun balance to be gained.

Ditto what caughtinside wrote. I've known many beginner female climbers with no gear, no rope and no experience (5.4 trad, 5.5 sport) who can't lead belay, want to climb with men because of their gear and experience and because of their willingness to climb with a beginner women who can't lead. Issues and problems ensue. Solution: hire a guide, buy gear, rope, learn to lead, carry your own stuff and if you want to climb with a guy, find one that is married/in a committed relationship and not attracted to you, and pay for the meals and drinks as a thank you. That makes you less of a leech. If you're already a strong climber with a full rack and rope you get to pick and choose your partners.
