Jim Bridwell
First one day ascent of El Cap---27 years ago!!!!
One of Yosemite's rock guns for two decades.
Big walls worldwide.
First ascent of the Moose's Tooth.
The man does it all. Period. I wonder if any of these sport guns can get up an A4-A5 horrorfest.

There will never be another Ron Kauk, who was on the cutting edge for 20+ years in trad sport and bouldering, first ascents on El Cap and the world's first Grade VII big wall, Uli Biaho in Pakistan. Edlinger says he was the role model for climbing ability and lifestyle that got the ball rolling on French limestone. Gullich says in his book that Kauk was the best climber in the world in his heyday. I would even argue that since none of his hard routes (Crossroads 5.13d, Peace 5.13d, Magic Line 5.14b) in Yosemite have been repeated he is the best granite free climber who ever lived.

Tough question since there are so many people who excell at many levels of our wonderfull sport.
I would have to say that I have a tie between Alex Lowe and Steve Haston. Both have excelled at ice and mixed routes as well as in the mountains. Alex was also a highly accomplished rock climber with onsights in the mid 13's. Steve has also done his fair share of rock routes with redpoints up to 14b.
I think part of the problem with this question is you really need to go by the era for each individual. Just like it is impossible to say who is the best basketball player ever the same applies to cimbing.
Messner did have great vision as a climber/mountaineer but his feats on rock routes is much less then what is being done by many people today. Anyways...my.02

Dean Potter, Ron Kauk, the Huber brothers, Fred Beckey, and the Benegas brothers all come to mind. Potter for pushing the limits of light-and-fast on some of the largest free/mixed/aid/alpine routes in the world, Kauk for doing the same thing years ago, the Hubers for blowing away limits in all disciplines ('Vee haf power to burn!'), Fred Beckey for his multi-decade resume of first ascents, and the Benegas brothers for hard ascents in Argentina, Yosemite, and all over the Americas.

Hermann Buhl was one of the greatest even by todays standards. His solo push to the summit of Naga Parbat still stands as one of the great mountaineering achievements. And his rock skills were way ahead of the times. Imagine if he had been born today with all of the advances in equipment that we have.

I think that Conrad Anker is the best all around climber. Lynn Hill is to one sided. Maybe Alex Lowe but he was to focuses on mountaineering and even had Anker along on several expeditions as a technical cimbing expert, which says something about Rad's mountaineering and rock climbing skills

IMO, Jim Bridwell.

He fits the visionary definition, was on the cutting edge of free and aid climbing, several FA's in Alaska and has done time in the Himalaya's as well.

Just my 2 cents.

Dean Potter had quite a trip to Patagonia this last year. He is inspiring. He also seems to have something that the rest are missing, a sort of inner peace.

Fritz Weissner. The man climbed all over the US and put up some of the hardest climbs of his time. Got within a 1000 ft of the summit of K2 in 1935 (or was it 38?) even though he was leading a team who couldn't match his skill level. He was still climbing into his 70's and 80's.

For an ALL-AROUND climber it would be hard to beat Greg Child. First ascents of difficult lines on 8000 meter peaks. First ascents of A5 routes on El Cap. First ascents of difficult Himalaya peaks alpine-style. 5.13 routes across the globe.
