ok i am just curious about everyones opinions here about strength vs. experience. first, i want to establish your point of view: answer this question from the viewpoint of a boulderer. It doesn't really matter if u are male or female or have been bouldering a long time or not much at all or if u boulder hard or not. so, of the following two people, identical in all aspects but those mentioned below, who would you respect more? in terms of personality ect... they are identical. Person A has been bouldering for 20 years. he boulders around once a week and frequents the local crag. he has been bouldering all over the world to many great destinations such as Font, Hampi, Caste Hill, Bishop, ect... He can be seen in the gym in the winter and on bad weather days. He projects V6 and V7 and is comfortable on V5 and below. Person B has been bouldering 4 years. He climbs 4 to 5 days a week, and is viewed as a fixture in the local gym. he climbs outside maybe once a month at the local spot and has made a few trips to other bouldering destinations (maybe he spent a week in Font last year...). He projects V12 and V13 and is comforatble on V10 and below. Warms up on V8. again, one is not cockier or whatever than the other. they are the same age and have the same attitude. so who would you respect more, based only on their experience and skill?

I would respect person A for his experience, and respect person B for his ability and power.

I would respect you more for Shutting The F*ck Up already, but don't flatter yourself and think that I would respect you outright.

Got to go with person A. But you know who I respect more?? Someone who is out searching for new rock, cleaning it up, sending it, securing acces, then making the info available for everyone else to visit. But back to the original scenario, I would have to say experience is more impressive than some young buck cranking out big #s. Put it this way: Your all sitting around a big camp fire. Person A is going to be able to relate some sweet stories and insight to great areas. Person B will be able to tell you about this new radical Pusher sloper he added to his three move eliminate problem in the gym. Whos to say that person a, given that he was born in the same "climbing situation" (standards, gym availability, training techniques at his disposal) would not have been able to crank those same big ##s?

In reply to: Mr T or Gary Coleman? Thats a tough one! Don't forget that evidently 3 foot 2 inch (ok so I made this up :) ) Gary Coleman laid a can of whoop ass down on a 300 lbs lady enough to get sued for assault. You have to admire that from someone that could walk between my legs w/o ducking.

At least you are not spending your time making bombs or something like that. To answer your inane question, I would not respect either of them, because even once a week in a climbing gym is TOO MUCH. Now, you answer my question please: Why do you waste your time coming up with these "Deep THoughts"? SHouldin't ypou be trying to do your homework or playing video games or aattempting to get in good with some girl?

i would not respect either of them until i'd sussed out whether or not they were fun to hang with or not. climbing tenure, or climbing prowess, is not a measure of a person "worth" much less a barometer of how much "respect" they deserve. assholes come in all flavors, including young turk and aging hardman. sorry xanx, but i gotta say it...man, the questions you ask....you need to get a clue and stfu, noob. and trust me, you'll never get it by surfing climbing websites. go live in the valley or josh or chamonix for a few years, then report back to us.

would you all perfer that i ask the "typical" RC.com questions? "Is this a good shoe to buy?" "LOOK!! I just got a new piece of gear!! Aren't i just so FCKING COOL?!?!" "How can i get stronger? (cue the blank stare...)" "I want to go climbing in ________ but am to fcking stupid to look in the routes database for the climbing oppurtunities there. Can someone please tell me how stupid i am?" gee, i guess i should stop trying to ask questions that require a little introspective thought.... God knows nobody wants to think these days... we just want to flame n00bs right? oh and bvb: if my questions are such a waste of your obviously invaluble time, then why do you deign to answer them? No one forced you to come in here and write a response to my unworthy question. Such an incredibly awesome, experienced, valuble resource such as youself shouldn't waste your time with my undeserving inqueries!! "sheesh."

The question seems contrived... person A is almost like a "persona," while person B is very specifically a person you know (you?)... Respect as a climber? Definitely A for experience, tenacity, and commitment. B gets props for getting good so quickly, but is not pure to the sport, since he climbs inside much more than outside. My $0.02.

I admit, I made him due it, I forced him to write that response. He does everything I say... pathetic really, but what do you expect. Here's another stupid question: Can somebody please tell me why I'm so stupid that I can't figure out how to properly quote somebody without laboriously copying and pasting? Is it because of all the Barge cement fumes I breathed in when I used to resole my shoes?
