I suppose that this is sort of off topic, but I'm looking into some small (and affordable) mountain towns in CO, Wyoming, Utha, and Idaho. I'd like to ski-bum it for a single year before going to college at Western State in Gunnison. I've been thinking about Nederland, Ketchum,Silverton, Ouray... I'm just looking for lots of snow and Back Country options and of course good mountain culture.

One option might be Driggs, ID.
It's small (maybe too small), not sure how affordable or how much 'mountain culture'.
It is, however, at the foot of the Tetons (on the pretty side), 15 minutes from Grand Targhee, not too far to Teton pass (psuedo-backcountry, in the sense that it's pretty easy to shuttle runs, not in the avy sense), and not much further than that to Jackson Hole.
ps. what exactly is 'mountain culture'? The two towns i've been to that felt like they had some sort of distinct 'culture' were Park City and Jackson Hole, but I thought that was 'tourist trap culture'.

k so i've lived in quite a few places and a couple years ago i lived in boise, id, it was pretty tight...not exactly your amazing mtn town but affordable and your like four hours away from great skiing in any direction... plus the local hill, bogus basin isn't too shabby. plus there's climbing everywhere. living in the north end part of it is tight, you can get an apartment for not too bad and live amongst a bunch of climbers/other people. telluride, co is also really sweet although paying to live ther is a bitch. skiings great tho.

what about the "sisters" in oregon?
good snow (not as wet as wash and mont), good climbing at smith, desert biking when you cant get into the pines, smallish, but Bend is close and not as pricey as Park City or Silverton.

Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe in the Alps, but the US or Canada? Forget it, unless culture=tourists, shit-kickers who hate you, and latte-sipping yuppies in 4-runners constitutes "culture."
Why don't you just head to school? Gunnison is a good location, and trust me, you will have PLENTY of time to ski, climb, and jerk-off your first year of school as you'll likely be taking just gen eds. But, if you've got some money laying around, taking a year off is a fine idea. I'm no skiier, so I can't give you much help there, but if you want a cheap area with good climbing look into the smaller towns of NW Wyoming.

I'm kind of thinking that going to school in Wasted State IS ski-bumming it! You'll have years of it, not just one year.

sisters is cool, i heard they got good bouldering and some alpine stuff...then again, it was like 2 in the morning when i rolled past there last, but form the looks of it, hard to bum it

check mccall, idaho off your list. I grew up here, and it is now totally fucked. it used to be ski bums, loggers, forest circus employees, miners, and hippies. now they have opened a new resort, "tamarack" (thats right, a "four season" resort named after the only needle-beating deciduous tree). tamacrack is just a realestate development in disguise. hello 100,000 an acre land prices, humvees everywhere (they may have small dicks, but at least they have more money than brains), jackass everywhere (driving the humvees), a whole lot of minimum wage service industry jobs, and 800 dollar single bedroom apartment rent. I am leaving her permanently. It is ruined. I am bitter and enraged. I hope it never snows here again. I hope all californians (white flighters- "cant stand the niggers in CA") all contract painful and debilitating diseases and die.

Bishop, CA is pretty dope! They have some pretty good skiing late in the season. Lots of back country potential and Mammoth is just up the road. And there is also some awesome climbing as you know.
Squamish has amazing climbing and a lot of back country skiing, with close proximity to Whistler. Cost of living in BC is retarded though, you maybe be living in a tent unless you can get a place to rent in squish.
Canmore is pretty sweet with everything you are looking for. I have seen rooms for rent there for around $300 per month. You are 1 hr from anything! Fortress Mt. Banff, Lake Lousie, are very close. A little further is Cranbrook, Golden and Fernie. There is also some great climbing in these areas.
If I had to chose I would probably go with Canmore or Bishop, just because of the cost of living. Whistler is just a tourist trap with too many rich people that think the know everything. LOSERS.
Anyway those are my opinions.

I just moved to Golden BC, and it's absolutely everthing you could possibly want in a mountain town. The best part about It, is it's still lurking in the shadows of tourist traps like Fernie, Canmore, Banff etc. With forty feet of snow and a Gondola rising up 4000 vertical feet it's backcountry paradise, probably better then Colorado b/c there's so much white stuff (champagne powder) and you can still ski stuff that's never been touched!!!

There alot of swiss/german's in Bolivia?
Levenworth is okay but there are some much cooler towns in this state with better rock if you can handel it.
