Actually, there is a serious and straightforward historical answer to your original question. When the letter sub-grades were introduced, it was felt that the then-existing 5.10s had a range of difficulty equivalent to three number grades, so naturally they used 3, er, 4 letters to subdivide 5.10. Consequently, the relative difference between two letter subgrades should be equivalent to the relative difference between 3/4 of a number grades -- at least that was the intent. -Jay [edit to correct 8th grade math error - Doh] [ This Message was edited by: jt512 on 2002-08-23 17:45 ]
