She just looks a little so "sensual" for a kid of her age.

Ok people. Listen up. I was there with Laurel, her father, JM and others the day this pic was taken. We were in Bishop and it was at least 80F all day. Everyone was wearing next to nothing. Laurel chose her own clothes for the shoot. And as far as make-up, I don't recall her putting anything more than a bit of lip balm on. She is European/Asian mix and naturally has this coloring. Perhaps it looks creepy to others, but let me tell you, there is nothing creepy about this pic.

Plus, she climbs harder than most people I know.

Her own father was there and didn't think about the implications of somebody photographing his young daughter in a bikini top? Interesting.

I doubt that either the photographer, her father or Laural had the intentions for her to look so grown up, but that is the end result. I guess I would have chossen photos of kids looking like kids for the calander rather than kids that look a little too grown up.

I guess I can see how it looks from an outside view. It's funny how the perspective changes when you are there for the process.

I dunno, it didn't really strike me as out of the ordinary. Just a kid climbing a rock. She's obviously young, but I didn't get any innappropriate vibe from this. I don't think they were going for that sort of photo shoot

You're both wrong. That was the Will Ferrell version.

I think these days it's unfortunately easy for well-meaning adults to want to protect kids from pretty much everything. I saw nothing wrong with that pic and it didn't seem sexual to me in the slightest. I climb around kids all the time and guess what? They dress like that sometimes. Frankly, calling her outfit "tartly," smacks of sitcom father-daughter interactions to me.

Why aren't more people worried about Madrock's zealousness in using kids to make money off of other kids? Why no helmet? That's what bothers me, but even then, they're not my kids and I'm not judging.

Of course she chose that top. Young girls, who are very impressionable, have been subjected to so many hypersexualized, too-mature images of young women and teens in popular media that they think that in order to look hot, they have to be showing a lot of skin. Hell, they think they have to look hot at all. Speaking of "hot," I have climbed in 80-degree temps several times, and have only worn a bra top a relative handful of times. I'm usually comfortable enough in a full-coverage top. Matter of taste, I suppose.

And I don't know how her climbing skill is a defense for anything.

But really, it's not her fault. She's a child. It's the photographer... and this is NOT the only photo he's taken that shows very young girls to look more mature than they are.

I just got my 15 year old daughter to look at the pic in question and she saw absolutely nothing wrong with it in the respect we're discussing here.

She said (I gave her no details but did ask about the halter and maybe mackup and the whole maturity thing)

"I don't think they dressed her that way on purpose. No, it doesn't strike me as off in any way."

Something to think about... We live in Southern California, on the beach. Girls/women of all ages, shapes and sizes wear bikinis all summer long. I personally have an entire drawer full of bikinis that I wear to surf, play volleyball and sometimes climb in. It is completely normal to see people wearing nothing but their bikinis and sandals into the grocery store. That's just how it is here...and no one thinks anything of it...it's a beach culture. For her to choose a bikini top is completely normal.

Perception is everything. People will look at a photo and their perception will be influenced by their personal values and experiences. Some people will see sexuality in a photo of a little girl in a bikini top, others will simply see a little girl wearing a bikini top.

As for defending JM and his photography style, I obviously don't know what's going through his mind. He is French, and the French have a different idea of sexuality and, like most Europeans, are more open when it comes to the human body. Again, I cannot speak for him in any way, just a theory. Plus, I personally don't see the sexuality in his other photos either. Perception, I guess.

And as far as why I mentioned that she climbs hard...well, wasn't the calendar a "climbing" calendar?

For what little my opinion is worth, what I first noticed in that pic was the earrings, lip liner and what looks to me like eyeshadow. Seemed odd to be "Glamming up" a kid for a calendar. Now you say that's just her natural color? OK I'll take your word for it but it sure looked like made for camera makeup. IS that particularly wrong? I don't know but seemed a little odd to me. The bikini I really didn't notice, I see girls and women climb in small tops, bikini's and sports bras all over the place.

What a pity that my cousin divorced and left SD to go back to Italy. I don't have the excuse to get there to see her anymore. I must admit that I will go to SoCal to see YOU!
Or if you want to post me a few pics, I will spare money and CO2...
