You need to dirtbag-it in the Valley for a few weeks and then tell us that the gym in not very clean. Get over it or go home.

Of course they can use AC. My gym does. Not only does the temp stay uniform top to bottom in all seasons (with huge fans), but the filters keep the dust away too.

most gyms (every gym i've been to) use swampers for air cooling- an actual AC system would be cost prohibitive for a space the size of your average climbing gym- (30' tall, 6000' or so square feet).

My gym doesn't allow people to not wear shirts, which is nice. The girls can wear their sports bras if they want, but they rarely do.

I have been known to arrive at a crag and de-shirt, but I only do when noone else is around, and I guarantee it isn't because I think I'm sexy.

Your entire post is pretty much the only reply needed to debunk the crap the OP was spouting. Germs aren't isolated to sweaty backs or sweaty feet, and there are lots of gross portions of peoples' bodies touching every surface in that gym. Get over it and climb.

Not to be a homophobe or germophobe but why do people walk around shirtless and barefoot at my climbing gym? I have had ringworm before and I don't want it agian. Patrons at my gym workout in the weightroom portion of my gym possibly infecting everything they touch with bacteria and fungi. I'm sure the staff at my gym never sanitizes the weight benches, chairs, benches, ect. at my gym with TCM or bleach spray. Maybe if dudes wore shirts other than boys (small) shirts they can hit the cross over crux of the boulding problem they are working on. Its winter in Ohio and the gym stays cool so why? I'm not trying to start a flame match here so just put your shirt on and keep your worm/rash to yourself....GYM OWNERS/MANAGEMENT needs to be a little more pro-active before they get slapped with a lawsuit or worse, loss of members. In a family atmosphere why would you want to stroll around with you shirt off anyways....sick. You would never see a person in a YMCA or Bally's fitness center walking around with their shirt off or barefoot. I'm sure there is more sweating and warmer atmosphere in those types of gyms and you don't see it...ever. BTW, outdoors, do what ever you want. I can't see myself catching your ringworm out there. Again, I am not starting a flame match so no need to flame trolls.Tongue

If you're so worried about germs you should avoid touching the HOLDS...more than worriyng about anything else.
I go shirtless on hard climbs ( when it's warm). You have to chalk less, the shirt doesn't stick on your back and doesn't go bethween your hand and the chalkbag.
I agree on sandals..but I always forget them.

I can totally see why there is a constant battle with access in the climbing community. The climbing community is loaded with trolls who have no class or moral standards. These trolls have no respect to resources and common sense guidelines. This is a huge reason why climbing areas get shut down.

In my original post I never mentioned germs, snot, pee or anything contaminating hand holds. Fungi and contageous skin ailments are what I am talking about. And the lack of gym owners/management being pro-active in providing a safe place to work out. I am not a whistleblower but their is an act of congress 1974 that could shut down all gyms who don't comply to the rules of sanitation, which is rarely enforces anyways. I'm done with this post and I will be one of the patrons who keep the gym and myself safe by bringing up issues like this one and I will keep my shirt on and respect common sense guidelines so my gym doesn't become quarinteened due to some outbreak of illness.

And lena-chita, keep you kids at home. They are probably the kids that run on the bouldering pads when some one is sending a problem above their heads. Meanwhile you are checking out all the "nice toned beautiful bodies" you mentioned instead of keeping your kids safe. Get your priorities straight...

Urine is completely sterile, unless it came from someone with a urinary tract infection. It is even potable without negative any ill effects.

Fenst wrote:

If this is something that disturbs you overly, I'd suggest another sport. Perhaps you'd prefer tennis? Golf? Knitting?

Whatever your choice, including if you stick with climbing and work hard to make it the bastion of decency you know it can be, I wish you the best of luck!

Whatever makes you happy. If you think that by wearing a T-shirt and not walking barefoot you will protect yourslef and others, be my guest. You might want to also wash the T-shirt in holly water. I hear it helps, too.

Parenting advice from people like you always makes so much sense. Thank you for keeping my children safe. I stand properly chastized, and I will no longer allow them to lounge on the bouldering pads underneath other boulderers. I will keep them safe at home at all times, and I will also sanitize them top to bottom at least twice a day, paying particular attention to proper fungiside dosage. And I will do a penance for checking out hot bodies of shirtless gym climbers... I might even start keeping my eyes closed for the entire training period. Blindfolded climbing is great exercise!

hey dude...you're really nice you know? Let me know if you climb around here in the bay area, I'll be glad to give you a belay man...really you sound like a fellow climber.
Oh..and climb outdoor sometimes..those rat infested bat guano covered holds are MUCH cleaner than the gym, noo risk of pathogens at all there...you will be safe!

Ignoring the poor spelling and grammar, could you post exactly WHICH congressional act would shut down "all gyms?" I'm in the mood to debunk your statement.

As for bare-feet: sometimes their puppies are barkin' and it really sucks for all of us. Those who try to boulder barefoot are the worst though, because I have to HOLD that with my hand.

Why you think that your hand is cleaner than your foot when you climb? After all your feet spend most of the time covered...your hands do not.
