Can't Post

I think a lot of people dillude themselves intot hinking that if they make it themselves, it will be cheaper and better than if they buy it. This is rarely the case. Beyond_gravity apparently understands this, but several people thought that he did not. A simple miscommunication insues and we have a really immature and foolish argument going on.

Oh, well. I guess that is a reality of human nature.

I wouldn't make something like ice tools unless I had a new idea to make them better than I could buy them. Even then, I would probably buy some and modify them.

But if you get more stisfaction from making stuff yourself than from having light weight, highly functional tools, I don't see anything wrong with that.

A fibergalss shaft would not be hard too make. Heck, carbon fiber prices are falling through the floor right now so you might make one out of that! Just cut the shape you want out of some polyurathane foam and apply your fibers. Your best bet would be to find a broken tool and scrap the head off, but you could machine it yourself. I guess you could glue it to the foam before galssing and run bolts through once it has set. I would definately use commercailly avalible replacement picks. The metalurgy to get those the right hardness and toughness is well beyond a hobby.

Well, I hope that helps.
Good luck.
