You are brave to do that, especially with stranger's kids in the shot. You were probably very nervous. After you calm down a little try to really see what your camera is seeing and practice using some of the rules of composition. Not that you always want to follow the rules, but being conscious of them while you shoot will force you to see what is really in the viewfinder.
Good first step!
What kind of camera were you using?

An old Nikon FE, the above picture was taken on Kodak TX 400 film.
I'll post some more when all my pictures are ready, I'm still experimenting with different cropping etc to get the most out of them.

Ok, here's the same picture with some touchups (stupid Jpeg artefacts...)
Here's another one from the same spot.
In hindsight I think I should have used a lower aperture like f4 (instead of f8) to blur out the background and to put more focus on the actual subject (the kid and the old man with mother and child). Now they're drowning in the whole picture imo.
The next one is my gf, which turned out exactly the way I wanted it to 
And in the last one I like the texture in the wall and the composition.

I have a photo contest for work and wouldn't mind your feedback selecting 3 photos for submission. There are the standard categories: People, Children, Nature, Architecture, Landscapes, Sunsets, Flowers and Wildlife. Paul that flash class looked great. some really nice work from it, that is probably the one thing I might break down and take a class for. I love those exposures.
Some fairly recent stuff, and one I went back to 2007 to process after messing with it back then I finally decided what I wanted from it.
Normally I don't do HDR for scenics or landscapes but the light was aweful and I wanted to accentuate the stone work done by the CCC in the 1930s.
Pentax K20D, DA 21mm Limited, 5 exposures at 2EV.
Pentax K20D, Sigma 10-20 (after some time I've decided the shadows on the roof need a little dodging in the foreground)
Nikon D1H, Sigma 70-200 2.8, f/5.6 -0.3EV, fill flash at 1/2 power at 1/1250th. I love the D1h because of the unlimited sync speed of the flash. I used a vivitar 285HV at 1/2 power to get some life in the eyes. I was syncing all day to as much as 1/3200th!
And in keeping with my philosophy of shoot now and process whenever, from the RAW archives of 2007
K10D, Sigma 10-20mm.

I had heard about that before, but never tried it. All of my film gear is back on the other side of the country anyway. I also lost my steel reels.

Thanks, I've been wanting to play around a little more with long exposure stuff so those were fun to shoot. Tried to get there just after it got dark hoping to catch a few more teams on the captain with headlamps on but only caught a few of them.
Here is another shot I got this past weekend while up in the Meadows of Tenaya.

Absolutely love the grain and contrast of Ilford Delta 3200 (which is a 1250ISO film) pushed to EI 3200! Of course rock climbing.com resizing algorithm sucks, but clicking on this one will bring you to the full 1080x1080 web image.
Pentax 645N, 55mm f/2.8 @ 5.6 (35mm equiv = 35mm), Ilford Delta 3200 @ EI 3200.

Yes, I set the camera ISO to 3200, and shot as normal, just like you would with any film you are pushing. Then I noted on the film exposed at EI 3200, process accordingly. Any decent lab (pro lab) will understand this and do what needs to be done. Ilford films are really tough to screw up in the camera or in processing so it's not all that difficult to get pleasing results back.
I wanted to stress that because Ilford 3200 is misleading, it is not a 3200 ISO film but a 1250 ISO film.
And yeah, I do love the grain structure and contrast. Although FP5 looks great pushed to 1600 as well, or you can also "pull" process these films for less grain and contrast. So shoot Delta 3200 at EI 400 and watch the grain disappear.

Some images I developed recently.
After fighting the urge to start developing my own black and white, I'm sort of addicted. Only issue is I hate spooling 120 onto plastic reels. Gonna get a stainless tank soon.
Pentax 645N, 200mm f/4 at f/5.6, Acros 100 @ EI 400, Kodak HC 110 developer (dilution B), 9.5 minutes @ 20C, agitation for 30 seconds to start, and then 5 inversions at the 1/2 way mark. Scanned using HP G4050, minimal digital adjustments. Love the lack of grain pushed 2 stops with Acros and the HC 110.
This one is Neopan 400, pushed 2 stops to 1600. A little more grain, but grain isn't always a bad thing (even though we've been trained in the digital age the "grain or noise" is a sign of a bad camera). Although as little as there is it is quite pleasing. Love the tones.
Pentax 645N, f/3.5 @ 1/60th, Fuji Neopan 400, pushed 2 stops to EI 1600, developed in HC110 dilution H (1:63) at 20C for 24min, agitated for first 1 minute, then again for 30 seconds at the 15 minute mark. Scanned using HP G4050 with Silverfast Ai. No photoshop adjustments.
Acros is a bit more contrasty than Neopan, and also tends to scan better (at least my initial impression).
The whole B&W thing is great because it's perfect for those who like to tinker but want a break from the computer and RAW files. All scanned with HP G4050 till I decide on a better scanner with a wet mount.
