So far, several things havent worked.

1. Dish soap and scrub brush (scrubbing ridiculously hard!) - No impact
2. Rubbing alcohol and scrubbing - No impact
3. WD40 and scrubbing - No impact
4. #2 and #3 combined - No impact
5. Alcohol hand sanitizer and scrubbing - No impact
6. Weak concentration of muriatic acid - Slight fading with TONS of scrubbing (arms gave out before the marker did)
7. Strong concentration of acid - Noxious fumes, burnt out arms, slight fading....and still no real impact

Im on a personal mission to get the right answer for this. Im gonna try the acetone and hairspray tonight.

I really dont know why the previous owner wanted to write quirky little sayings on the outside of the holds like "squeeze me or big eyed willie or pull up hard" but i vow to remove it without seriously damaging the friction of the hold.

Take and have them bead/sand blasted. There will be no discoloration, no toxic chemicals involved, the texture of the holds will be preserved and the sharpie markings will be gone.

Not all nail polish removers contain acetone.

I only bring this up because the OP mentioned he was going to try acetone tonight. If by that he meant he was going to try nail polish remover, then he should know that if that doesn't work it might be because there's no actual acetone in his remover.

I did have partial luck with nail polish remover last night, however, just like you said, it was acetone-free. The non acetone polish remover began to fade the sharpie, but again my arms gave out from scrubbing before i was able to remove the marker. Does anyone know if they still make any polish remover with acetone in it, or is acetone something that must be bought separately at a hardware store?

judging on how the non-acetone polish remover worked, I think the acetone just might do the trick.

Thanks Curt, I actually didnt even think about that. I know someone who would be able to do this. If regular acetone doesnt work, this method will be next.

It does suck because of all the time wasted, but once i can find a good answer, others who run into this wont have to try every trick in the book.

I don't know if they make nail polish remover with acetone. Maybe you could just buy some acetone and mix the two.

Sandblasting them would definitely help.

SmileUpdate: Problem solved!!!!Smile

With special thanks for the info, I am happy to report that Acetone did the trick on all the Pusher holds.

I didnt realize they sold different types of nail polisher remover, either regular (with acetone) or acetone-free. Once i got ahold of some remover with acetone in it, the marker was as good as gone.

Plain old nail polish remover (with acetone) and a wire brush will remove sharpie marker from your holds. Takes some scrubbing time, but will definitely do the trick. The wire brush didnt ruin the texture either.

*use in a well ventilated area...the fumes from the nail polish remover can make you a little nausous!**

Thanks for all the help in this thread!

Just came across some great old school Pusher holds but the previous owner had a thing for writing all over the holds in sharpie marker. Ive tried rubbing alcohol and muriatic acid but neither got rid of the sharpie. All ive been able to do is dull the marker. Anyone have any good tricks i could try? Im about to sand the marker off but thats gonna look rough!

I'm guessing this was you?

i like jermanimal's idea - try the grain! hey if it don't work, you can have a drink! if it does work, you can have a drink. after all that you won't care and you can have a drink.
