Would it be remotely realistic to be able to train yourself to be able to fall vertically from very high distances and land with a certain exact and calculated technique so that you can cause little to no harm to your body? Are there people that do this? Videos? Real life ninjas so to speak? I've had this scenario stuck in my head for days of some mysterious acrobat that could leap from a building and walk away perfectly. Needless to say, this would be a very cool thing to demonstrate to friends. I already drink litres of milk a day so I know I have good bones haha =P

I think there's a obvious, underlying question here that needs to be addressed before any talk of falling in a ninja-style fashion can be discussed and that question is: Are you retarded?

well, there ARE ways to prevent injury from falling, but mind you those ninjas you mention are actually free runners, or practice parkour. its slightly different falling from our type of fall; we fall vertically whereas they "fall" semi-horizontally and thus can roll into the fall. there isn't a way for us to fall safely unfortunately, so stay smart, keep yer spotter and your crashpad nearby.

I said remotely, like being able to land 15 or 20 feet consistently without damage, not 1000. Thank you however for the warm welcome since this was my first post on the forum.

In reply to: Yea what was I thinking, that it might be cool to join this forum and meet some new people and discuss some cool things about this great new hobby I have found and enjoy very much Now that sounds like a good idea Discussing ninjas on the other hand just makes you look like a troll. Everyone on the interwebz knows that you must have at least 1000 posts in a forumn before you can start the ninja discussions. Even I am not in that category yet. edit: I can't spell

I don't care for ridiculous and arbitrary "interwebz" customs too much. edit: That sounds a bit condescending, sorry if it offends you I just think all the internet stuff that goes around is stupid.

Even the bad ass parkour guys generally try to land on flat dirt or grass. Uneven rocks and talus just add too many variables for that kind of impact. And parkour has got to be more dangerous than climbing.

Well I wasn't really thinking of outdoor rocky terrain, but rather in a climbing gym where the floor is like 2 inches of padding with alot of give to it.

I have heard (from a guy who knows a guy...) that a practitioner of Budo Taijutsu (members of the Bujinkan led by Masaaki Hatsumi, also sometimes referred to as "ninjitsu") once used his "ninja roll" technique to protect a fall of several stories from a building. The story went that he was working as a firefighter, had found a small child but was unable to get to safety without terrible risk to the unprotected child. He chose to leap from the building (I don't remember how high) and executed the roll technique to successfully keep himself and the child from injury. I wasn't there, I didn't see it. I am merely repeating a story I have heard. There is a technique for taking a fall and minimizing injury that is taught in "ninjitsue" but unless you are trained to do it, or know another way to jump headfirst and not get injured I wouldn't recommend trying it. It will be similar if not identical to the technique taught in parkour. You could take a look at the PLF taught by the military at airborne school. That is designed to take significant force in a foot first situation and redirect it without injury (or at least without significant injury) though I doubt it would work very well from very high up if you don't have a parachute.

it is actually physically impossible to die from a high fall. all you need to do is land feet first. anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.

I did some martial arts for a while and we practiced break falls as part of the warm up. I think that those principals apply pretty well to falling while bouldering and seem to be pretty much the same movements as those used by the parkour guys.

I'd think that there's be a certain amount of overlap in falling techniques, but in general, boulderers should fall like boulderers and not martial artists or traceurs.

But, the true secret to being able to not get hurt by a fall is not to fall. Since I have >1k posts, I can add: Ninjas don't have to worry about falling from great heights because they jump, not fall.

Probably. I've been having a bit of a hard time managing to fall lately, but that's largely because I've taken to napping at the base of problems instead of climbing them.

In reply to: BTW, does your new work have a computer now? You seem to be posting more regularly. Yeah, my new job has always had a computer, I just am not at it too often. The last week or two has been pretty slow so I have had more time at my computer, but starting tomorrow, it looks like that will end.

And although I love the original song (Dean Martin's "Sway"), the remix they use is terrible. (Edited for grammar.)
