Doing a very informal survey. What do you think is the most annoying/frustrating/stupid/embarrassing part of going to the gym... the loud, shirtless guy with his unholy grunting on V1 boulder problems? The dusty old man wearing socks with his climbing shoes, traversing back and forth over your route? The cloud of unruly children throwing their chalk balls at each other? Let me know. thanks.

When there aren't any new routes set. That's the worst.

I hate kids. They don't watch where their standing or where I'm climbing. They think chalk balls are toys.

Not having new routes can be an issue. However, one can always volunteer to route set. Route setting can be very rewarding.

I've never asked, but I really doubt they would let people set routes at my gym. They are very serious. The route setters are also well paid and very good.

Sometimes I hate when there ARE new routes, and they ruined the good spot for traversing. No, I can't traverse the 5.12s in the lead cave...

Not going outside.

Bus load of kids that are there for a birthday party, and would be happier running around Chuck-E-Cheese.

Laugh

the two things i hate - people faffing around and not climbing when they're on the route i want to climb (e.g. chatting at the bottom, hangdogging for an eternity), and people who don't stick to the route / section of the wall they're on (i.e. meandering off to the side so that they're actually on the route next door that i'm trying to climb).

A few annoying gym things...

1. People who bring infants still in portable little baby carriers.

2. People who take off their shoes while they're being lowered.

3. People who read while at the gym.

4. People who seriously use a treadwall.

5. People who seriously use a campus board.

6. One time some guy "Personally Disagreed" with me about a way I preferred to perform a move on a bouldering problem.

Yeah seriously... campus boards are good training.

And... when I was breaking in my new shoes that are a little too small I think... when I got to the top of a route I really really wanted to take them off... so I'm one of those slackers that would take off their shoes at the top because it was a *huge* relief.

These days at my gym the biggest problem for me has been lack of difficult routes. It seems the hardest topropes they've been setting recently are probably in the 5.11b/c range. There's some tough boulder problems, though I don't really care for bouldering as much.

You got it made! The local gym here is at a ymca. The hardest routes are like... easy 10. I would kill for a consistent supply of 11's.

1) n00bs

2) parties of n00bs

3) n00bs putting chalk on footholds that are shared with the problem i'm working

4) n00bs who are allowed to belay parties and don't know how to stop a swing (actually, that's kindof a bonus... screaming peter pans and a panicking n00b saying "it's ok, just try to be still" is good comic relief)

5) projects being taken down the day after i start

inhaling chalk for hours on end

smelling everyone's stank ass shoes

and dealing with the inconsistencies of route grades.

Short boulder problem setters who get upset when their boulder problems aren't climbed "the way they're supposed to be" because of my height and reach. Even worse, the same short boulder dudes and their ridiculous sit-starts. Oh, and last week I found a gri-gri that was threaded the wrong way. Yikes.

I agree! I was injured at my gym 3 weeks ago (bad sprain while bouldering). The injury was/is pretty bad, but the story that accompanies it would be so much better if it didn't start with, "Well, I was climbing at the gym..." it's all good though. :)

Why is this a problem? Just leave out some of the holds on a set route to make it harder or combine different routes. Or just point at random holds and go "that one, that one, those two, that one" and you have a brand new L33t 5.15e route.

One of the benefits of going to a gym is just hopping on cool routes that other people set.

If you remove holds from most of the routes over there, you'll never be able to make it past that section. We call it the longcat gym. For most of the routes, you need to be longcat himself in order to make some of the moves (without dynoing). I cant stand gym routes where the only reason a move is difficult is because you're a foot shorter than the guy who set it.

All the routes are about the same. Big reach, high step, hand foot match, big reach, high step.... etc

I've been going there for long enough that I've been able to work myself in as a route setter... so that should help a bit.

Edited to fix quoting

People I don't know yelling up beta.

Funny part about that though is finding out later that the person yelling the beta can't even do the route.

Preserved for proof of sheer stupidity.

I think everyone misunderstood me. I love kids and I think it's great that they discover this great sport at a young age. However, I've had many annoying experiences. I might be projecting a technical boulder problem and I'll be in the middle of the climb. And then a young kid whose not paying attention to the color tape I'm climbing will get in my way. With bouldering, your suppose to yield to a climber who is on the wall and has started before you. I yield for the kids and I expect them to yield for me.

Also, I have one of those big free standing chalk bags. I've had kids reach in and take a chalk ball out and smack it on the walls and floors creating a mess and cloudy air.

Of course, I know not all kids behave poorly, but generally, I prefer people of my age or older at the gym.

First of all, I was refering to kids that are not behaved. Down here in Florida we have some rowdy kids.

Secondly, don't be cocky because you can send a 5.10. For 12 years old that's great. As long as that adult who is falling on 5.10 is having fun, that's all that matters. It's not everyone's goal to be great. Try giving them advice if they welcome it. Sometimes helping someone can be just as rewarding as sending a hard route. I'm the second best climber at my gym and I love helping. It doesn't build my ego to see someone fall on a route that's easy for me. You got issues if that gets you off.

Sadly, you'll have to crank quite a bit harder to pull that off on me, but train hard and I'll be more than happy to cheer you on if you show me up. I'll even buy you a beer afterward. Wait, do tweens drink beer or are they still more into the sweeter liqueurs, hard lemonades and various fruity rum and vodka drinks at that age?

Actually, when I was your age, I had a problem with adults that got pissy when I climbed harder than them. So long as you stick with it, someday you will be able to school me on the rock, but I promise that I'll only be crying about it on the inside.

The most annoying problem at the gym I go to is...

You've been being a mentor to a newish climber for several weeks. You try as much as possible to let her figure things out her own.

So, while you're explaining some technique ideas, some random climber comes over, interrupts, hops on the problem and says "here, it goes like this". Yes... we know it goes like this... we've seen people send it all day, that's not going to help our climber nearly as much as walking through some details on specific movements.

The worst part for me is knowing that every climb I attempt is just a representation of what the setter thinks climbing ought to be. Then I go outside and I see the true authenticity of climbing which makes me feel like I wasted my time and skin on a fake climbing experience.

I didn't used to really believe this but I do now, there is no substitution for the real thing, period.

Our setters regularly (OK, maybe twice a year) make climbing trips to different parts of the country. When they come back you can tell that they try and set a route that mimics some of what they just climbed.

I've found that what I climb in our gym reflects what I can expect to climb in our corner of the country.

What's the worst part of going to my gym?
Probably the hour-long commute and $1 toll each way. I spend more on gas and toll than the day-pass.
But it beats the 9-hour drive to rock worth climbing on.
Being a climber in Florida is tough Unsure

I can't believe I've not replied with this yet:

The worst part about going to the gym is telling your parents that you're gay.

It was my mom that actually introduced me to gym climbing, but I guess that makes sense. I don't know if it was the way that she supported my artistic inclinations, or if it was the way she'd occasionally ask, "So, have any sexual intercourse with men lately?", but deep down I had a sneaking suspicion she thought I was gay.

Maybe that joke only works in Utah. I've had two friends whose parents were somewhat disappointed that their daughters aren't lesbians.

To the contrary, old chap, I would take it as a compliment to my family name and bid you a good day.
