Hey Guys, Has it ever occurred to you? You just had a long fall on your rope and damaged its shield a little bit. You are not sure if the rope is still safe to be used for another ascent, and you said what if there was a device right here with me so I could check if my rope is fine. There are many incidents like this that we say that "what if" and we all know that with today's technology, it's just nonsense that such a tool or device does not exist yet. Can you share your thoughts and experiences no matter how nonsense they might be? Your "what if"s and that little thing you wished you had that hasn't been made yet. Cheers Iman

I would like an app, which would tell if the piece you just placed is bomber or not. Since, obviously I would trust an app based on some arbitrary input much more than my own experience and gut feeling.

No that has never occurred to me because I dont need to have a phone tell me if my rope is safe, I have a brain to do that. Also, its the sheath, not the shield.

Cheers Iman That reminds me of the situation a few weeks ago. Me: Hey, we probably should get gas soon. My (young) carpooling partner, pulling out his iPhone: Let me see, we are here, the nearest gas station would be... Me: dude, there is a sign right there, next exit, 2 miles. He (head still burried in the phone): no, wait, I think the better one would be if we go to the next exit... Me: no, really, I see it, right there, we are getting off on this exit.

Thank you guys for your replies. And thank you USnavy for correcting me. And lena_chita, I had a terrible experience using my iphone's map too. So I totally know what you mean. But guys, we are not talking about some useless never-functioning iphone apps that are only made to show some stupid ads. NO. We are talking about devices and tools. As good as your gps that you carry around whenever you are on a sort of expedition, or a avalanche transceivers that helps save lives. And about the rope case, it was just an example, not necessarily a good idea to develop a device for. So, tell me what you think!

Yeah, the thing is, part of the appeal of climbing outside (at least for me) is to escape all the "noise" of modern life, including all those electronically-powered, sophisticated gadgets. I'm not saying they wouldn't be useful, but . . . maybe you could direct your question to rock gym owners and see what kind of devices they might need or want?

I'd pay $5 for an app that was able to tell me when a certain route was in the sun (accounting for tree cover) on a given day at Shelf road.

can you make some sort of electroshock device that will shock everyone who has their I-phone on at the crag? Now that would be useful!

I thought it would be cool to have an electronic bong. And when Belizzi said he'd bring his vaporizer on the Reg Route, I thought my prayers were answered. But when he asked me to carry the car battery to power it, I realized that it would be better to just roll joints and make sure we had enough lighters instead.

I think an augmented reality app would be cool. Like if you pointed your camera at the route and it would highlight the holds or alternate routes, but that would be well very difficult and expensive to make happen. also electronic chalk. hahahaha
