At the rate the BET thread is going, this would be considered the most exciting news of the week.

We got to my parent's place safely. Got a surprise-- my (my mom's?) cousin from Israel is visiting with his family, so it's a busy house.

(side note-- did I mention that i hate the impreciseness of the English term 'cousin' that covers everything and anything that is not brother/sister? How do I convey that this is the cousin who is my maternal grandfather's brother's son without making it a long sentence? There is a word for it in Georgian-- but darn it, not in English!)

They have a girl slightly older than my baby monkey, so the kids are super-happy to have company.

I enjoyed the company very much last night, while we were talking about travels, cooking, and other relatives. This morning breakfast conversation turned to religion and politics. Oi, vey!

I think that there are a bunch of different ways to number the degree of your cousin (1st, 2nd, 3rd), then say which generation they are relative to you (once, twice removed, etc). But beyond that I get confused, even with tons of experience due to a family full of Mormons who procreate a dozen times over several decades and then live into their nineties. It's complificated.

Having good thymes with the camhead side of the fam in savannah, ga. Mostly just drinking and playing a bunch of music. Dribble was teh designated durnk last night. We're gonna head down to the drivel side in fl tomorrow, where there will be more kids and less booze.

Salt Lake City is snowy.

Little Cottonwood Canyon is undergoing avalanche control in the AM. Road is shut down until 8:30. I suspect that there will still be a fair amount of traffic, despite it being Christmas.

Haven't run into any Gerks, yet. I don't expect to.

Another day of being coped up inside with lots of food, diverse group of people, and no climbing. I REALLY wanted to play Tim Minchin's Storm song at lunchtime today. But I maintained my equanimity i the face of discussion of how flax seed cures 107 diseases and scientists don't want to look for natural cures.

They are both very good in smoothies, and very good for you.

Just don't expect them to cure advanced-stage cancer.

So a 5 day trip to Minnesota and back isn't really enough.

Day 1 we drove to Wisconsin, visited Nathan's Grandmothers in the afternoon/evening.

Day 2 we drove to Minneapolos, stopped at a friend's place, picked up schwag. Stopped at a cigar place and bought a box for a friend back in Ontario. Drove to his mother's and opened previously ordered packages of gear and hung out.

Day 3 we did the chirstmas thing with his family.

Day 4 we were going to go climbing for the day but that would have made his mother sad. Nathan also needed to do the email thing for World Cup planning. His mother doesn't have interwebs so we hung out at his sisters. Late afternoon we drove back to Wisconsin to visit his grandmas again and get a jump on the drive home in the morning.

Day 5 we took off in the morning, made good time through Chicago, then hit snow fairly early on in Michigan. Did battle with the snowstorm the rest of the way home (~8 hours worth).

This morning I slept in and let the streets get plowed before I made the drive back to Owen Sound. I'm anxious to see the cat, but I'm sure he'll be happy to see the card from Nugget.

Hehe, checking in from teh Deep South. Hung out in savannah for a few days. My parents can outdrink me. Then went to drivels sisters place in NoFL, where we have gifts to nieces and nephewses, almost successfully avoided annoying political conversations, & ate too much.

Now drivel is off to swingity swings camp; I was originally gonna climb in chatt, but instead I'm hanging at teh sisters in ga with my gimp foot. Bah. Cool thing is that she is datezing a climber & I may even be able to go in and campus/hangbored at their co-op gym here. Woo!

The internets here is pathetically slow, like wifi but with dial up speeds. So all my Internet stuff I do is on the 3G and the Iyup.

That is all. Glad we're in the south right now tho; I guess the north and west are getting hammered right now.

yes, I know.

But according to that table, "first cousins once removed" could be either

1) children of your first cousins
or
2) children of your great aunts/uncles

(Just one example, the same uncertainty is there for 2nd cousin once removed, first cousins twice removed, etc. etc. )

There is a big difference between my first cousin's son, and my great aunt's daughter, KWIM? Yet in English they are both my first cousins once removed.

And also, in English there is no distinction between maternal and paternal side, but in Georgian there is-- there is a different word for aunt who is your father's sister, and aunt who is your mother's sister, and they are very different. Mother's sister is considered much closer, eve though it is the same degree of separation.

I still haven't climbed.

Yesterday was all about baby niece who decided to make her appearance a week early. I am now 2x auntie, and everyone is doing well.

She's cute as a kitten, and about as tiny. Gosh, I forgot how tiny they are in the beginning!
