When I started...I was in college and into doing extreme things..the first place I ever climbed was about a 5.9-10 about 35' high. That was like the first climb i ever did. I was scared out of my mind...but knew I could so it and got hooked after that first climb. Ever since I have been into it big time and looking for more fun. I have been out camping with college roomies and we saw a face and decided to either climb one here or repell one there. I have even put my harness on backwards and Auzie repelled off some cliffs....that was very uncomfortable and scary....but fun as hell:) That's my story in a nut shell The Russman

I got into it because a friend of mine started and was constantly telling me that I should go with him, so I finally went when he came back from college, and I've been hooked ever since. Its a rush you can't get anywhere else, and it's fun as heck.

I got into climbing when I was younger and did it because my friends did it. But what keeps me climbing is I am a college student with a whole lot on my mind about the future and the "real world", and when I climb the only thing I can think about is what I am doing at that moment. I am slowly getting back into climbing after I hurt my knee. While I was not doing it I realized how theraputic it really was. Also it is a total high from start to hours after your done. Like Phishphan said, when climbing I only think about what I am doing at that moment and not all the other troubles and problems of life. I get the same feeling when cycling (without the rush!) that my mind is free to focus on the moment. Anyway, it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on (unless you climb naked!). Climb On

Where do you live?!?! Chicks around here could really care less. Rather than "You climb 5.12?!?! Take me now!" (as it should be) you get "Yeah. Climbing is neat, I guess. What kind of car did you say you drive?" (If any of you Vancouver ladies would like to prove me wrong, my email address is in my user info.)

I've wanted to get into rock climbing ever since I was little, on our drive up to Alaska, when ever I saw a big rock I would always say.. "I want to go climb that rock, pleeeeease dad!!!!" Then one day, he took me to the rock gym and that was was how I got into it. I love it now and it gave something for me and my dad to do.

There are so many good things about climbing its impossible to list them all so Ill just say, dont forget about the bad, ecological impact, wading though an swarms of other climbers, getting killed or worse,no time left for a life, spending all your money on tripps and gear(youll never own anything)and most importantly loosing friends who youv shared the best times of your life with. Thats about all the bad stuff I can think of right now and it cant hold a candle to the good stuff. ITS WORTH IT!

Beerandblood why dont you tell us a little more about yourself? I like some of what youv said. Where are you from, what is your age, how long have you been climbing? You sound like an interesting person tell us what youv climbed and what youv experienced while climbing. How do you feel about placing bolts on moderate routes if its a first ascent. Weissner did it. What about today can that be called good style. Give us your perspective. I admit I havnt read all your posts but the ones I have read tell me that I should be interested in what you have to say.

Well, I started climbing when I was about 12, just to see if I could do it. It seems that life got in the way for several years, and I didn't have an opportunity to pursue climbing. Recently, I started wanting to climb again...it helps me focus, and effects every aspect of my life. Nothing calms the mind and soul like being on the rock!!!!

I started climbing for cross-training purposes, then I started thinking about it 24/7. I then joined a rock gym and go 3 times a week. I'm hooked now. I will be going on some real rocks in a couple of weeks. I do it because it's all about what I can and can't do physically, and the rush when I get to the top and look down is unrealistic. I also like the trust you get from a person when you are belaying them.

Hi All, I climb to quell all the chaos going on in my feeble head. When I am climbing,I am FOCUSED on what I am doing. No cacophany of thoughts running endlessly on in my head.Climbing is an escape from the mundane existance otherwise refered to,as my life. I do however, enjoy the other benefits. The fitness I have gained is great. The fellowship of climbers, here at RC.com in particular, has shown me that life does indeed have it's redeeming moments. The photo's I have taken, the memories I carry, the excitement and sense of accomplishment I have felt, all cannot be equalled by any other activity. I am a member of an ELITE group of people who thrive on adventure. YEAH So,Climb Happy Mitch

Well, i climb becuase i love it. i am getting in shape, which is important, and i am focusing more. there is endless bennefits to climbing, only a few "downfalls" (excuss the pun). first is the fact that gear cost money, second is if there isn't climbing around, what do you do then? and third, well, i don't think there is a third. i love climbing, i got my gf into climbing, and i will continue to love climbing for a long time!!!!! good luck

I started climbing because I figured I needed to drop a couple thousand dollars more into a sport, Hah! Actually, because my brother introduced me to the sport. I already ski and kayak-religiously and thought that rope skills would compliment both. Now all of them will be competing for time. I suppose alot of it has to do with an interaction with the elements and nature. It isn't that team sports don't interest me it is that I like being reminded who is really boss-- mothernature!

I climb, because I love the challenge. I climb for me... to better myself. It's not just physical... it's emotional, and psychological... It works you to push your limits physically and mentally. And I love my climbing bud's, they push me further, I push them further.. we all want to see the best in each other... that's why I love it.. It's a community, a family... cheers Elk

Why is such a complex question. Because I love rocks. Because when I was a kid, I climbed up and down this one mountain so many times I could run down the rocks on the way back, each rock meeting my foot. Because when I was sick in bed for two years I had a vision of rocks in the desert I'd go to when I was well. When I went to Joshua Tree, I knew I'd found that place. I climb to challenge myself, to build my physical strength and adaptability, to be present in the moment.

I love to climb for so many reasons: it's a personal challenge that feels so damn good when you reach the top, it relies on all kinds of skills (technique, flexibility, intelligence, imagination, strength, endurance, and more), it can be just a simple warm-up or a killer workout, you can be out in the middle of nowhere with nasty dehydrated food and no bug spray while stinking to high heaven but as long as your scrambling up real rock your loving it...it's hard to describe all the reasons and they go on and on...how about I just do?

My brother got me started and I've loved every minute since. It's impossible to focus on anything else when you're climbing, you're too focused on not breaking your butt. I love constantly prooving myself wrong. At least some point during a climb I"m convinced that I won't make it past a certain spot. And when I do, there's no better feeling.

its getting the gear ready the night before, little sleep with dreams of the climb interwoven. its the hike in, finding the route, putting on the harness and shoes, sorting the rack with now sweaty hands, taking the deep breath, dipping the hands in the chalk and saying on belay. its the heart pounding, the mind focused, the muscles working, and the rack clinking. its the great views, great frinds and partners, and a moment in time where nothing else matters!!

I don't even need a question to as why i climb. I do it for the adrenaline rush and it keeps me in shape, without climbing, I can picture myself a round-ass blob on the couch watching reruns of old soaps just because I'm too lazy to reach for the remote. Climbing, for me, is a way to get away from all the stress I have to deal with at home, school and just the everyday things. I climb because -I- want to, not because my friends do. Actually, I have lots of friends that are into climbing. But only two people love it as much as I do. And I'm grateful to have two best friends that do. Sorry, I've gone off-topic for why I climb, to my friends. But for me, just thinking about climbing just gets me going, I get excited and my fingers tingle. And yes I've been climbing for about a year and a half, constantly, and I still get that feeling. Now I wanna get out there and climb!!! I just have to work around my job...there's an open window nearby, maybe they won't notice I'm gone...

I climb for the very simple plearsue of it! and for the mere fact that when you do overcome that crux move, that you have been working on, you all most reach an apotheosis state. Where no one or no thing can stop you!

"What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know." — René Daumal. ... in search of my soul .. it's always up there, somewhere in the splendor and beauty of the infinite space between myself and the heavens ..

At first I had suicidal tendencies and I lost a bet. I survived, I laughed, I cried, it changed me. I found spiritual fulfillment and true inner meaning. My parole officer said it would bring much-needed self esteem or rid society of a social pariah (I always wondered why he suggested my soloing some routes). I got ripped and strong and was soon able to overpower him. I've been on the lamb ever since. Or . . .maybe . . .yeah, it's the chicks. I climb to get chicks. That and it's cheap.

I've been climbing for nearly three months and I'm ready to Sport lead this weekend. I can't wait. The adrenaline rush is "the bomb!!!" Climb on!!! JULES
