Hardest I've led is 5.7, and I've been climbing for 5 years. I'm happy w/ tr and bouldering. I could do the moves on harder routes on lead, but I'm happy where I'm at for now. It's a confidence thing for me. I say, if your friend thinks you're ready, and he is pretty experienced, go for it. You only know by doing it. Good luck.

I did'nt read all of the posts but you seem like you have a good head on your shoulders, so here are my .02. I lead my fist sport route at 15, the 3rd climb I did, so like I read before it depends on who you are climbing with. Mentor, someone who has climbed and instructed, or like my dad said "Just make the first coupla clips and forget that your leading". I'm sure someone will quote me and then give me shit for this advise. So be it. I worked for OB and a few other "groups" and there were several times where a kid would be ready for lead (sport) and he/she did. Maybe said before, like beginning Trad, TR the climb if it makes you (or your friends) feel more comfortable. I've climbed in a gym 1 time so I don't know too much about that but if YOUR asking this question your ready. Just have someone competent to go with you who understands your current goal. It aint top-roping but the risks are worth the rewards, and why not get started before the snow melts. As you move on and know your limits it all becomes even more serene. Today, in the frigid cold, I free-soloed a route I had climbed several times before for the first time. NOT saying you should do that, but think about it. How else are you going to "know your limits?." I'm unable to imagine climbing without leading. Peace.
