I think I saw something related to this that was posted before but I cant find it. I got a whole lot of Chalk for christmas and I wanted to know if there was a good way to make it into a chalk ball, cause my whole hand gets sweaty. I was thinking, putting it into a sock or something. Maybe first put it in a cotton sock, then rap some panty hose around it or something. Any good Ideas? And please dont say buy a chalk ball, cause then I would have to order off the net and shipping would be more than the ball itself.

1) Get panty-hose (cut a leg off) 2) Fill it until you have enough 3) Twist it off (tight) 4) Pull the rest back over 5) Twist again If you don't like the double wrap just do a single, double keeps the chalk from coming out in access [ This Message was edited by: maxx on 2002-01-01 10:47 ]

Buy a thin sock from Kmart, like those thin white ones people wear with climbing shoes. Buy chock Put chock in thin sock. use 2 small rubber bands to keep it closed.

My first set-up- Chalk ball: Old cotton sock (yes, pantyhose works better, but I just don't wear it) with a few holes poked in it to let more through, closed with several staples. Chalk bag: Raisin English muffin bag with top rolled down, use circular wire opening made from piece of coat hanger twisted into a hoop around rim of 'bag.' Hold hoop to bag top with duct tape. Attach bag to harness with piece of nylon twine. Weight of ball in bag, 'folds' the loop down against your body, thus closing bag; easy to get into, auto close (while climbing). Used black magic marker to write "I'm a cheap bastard" on the back of the English muffin-come-chalk bag. Worked for about a year. Or, you could always order off the internet... (Yes, I could afford a chalk bag, but I felt I was exercising my constitutional right not to get ripped off by paying $8 for a freakin' bag that's worth about $0.50. You could get a plane flight from Mae Hong Son to Chaing Mai for $8....) [ This Message was edited by: kzemach on 2002-01-03 18:38 ]

I'm in the middle of making a chalk bag out of duct tape.I use that stuff for everything! My philosophy;"It isn't broken, it just lacks duct tape"! It'll at least look original!

I got a cool chalk bag made my mate. My first chalk bag was too small, and larger ones were about 35-40 AUS$. This new one cost 10 bucks, and it's got everything bought ones do. He even sewed that fluffy stuff inside.

yo rockjok i agree with you,it costs me a fortune to buy chaks here too so i make my own chalkball.just needs a cotton sock(it holds the chalk better).rest is all the size of the ball and it depends on you how big you like it.

I got a container of half crushed chalk from Mountain Designs today for 7 bucks. I't made by Saltic, and works a treat. Just refill your old ball with the chunks, crush it up a bit, and...viola!!!.

If you have a block and you want it to be ball, you can take one or two pantyhouse (yes you have to take them off first), break up the chalk alittle, and put it on in, you can break it up the rest of the way in the bag so people dont think you were doin the "white lines" There you go!

mmm, i used to make those pantys chalkballs, even with three wraps arounds, but it always got rip and the chalk out, what i made like 6 months ago was to used an old sport sock, those socks that dont have a partner (clean it first), roll it and sew it while rolling it, so yo make a ball of sock, filled with its own sock. then put it in your chalk bag and put a lot of chalk, the chalk will go deep in to the chalk ball while you use it, and if you want to mark any hold you can use your new sock ball or even throw it to an upper hold or your partner. hope this tip can be usefull. Robo p.d. if anybody comes to climb here in Peru, contact me, i sell Xhok chalk here, im the producer so i can give you the best price.

Hey, I've never done it before, but would either a couple of layers of gauze or cheesecloth work? Both have fine holes in them. Just a thought. Take care. Luke

In reply to: Sock...Chalk in sock...Sock tied shut...Walla` chalk ball use an old cotton sock inside out... this gives you a little more texture and you can scrub slopers with it... when it wears out you throw it away and replace it with another. I also keep a little loose chalk in there because I am a hot, sweaty, greasy, bo hunk kinda guy.

LOL!! Last few posts were hilarious. You're right. climbers are the most easily entertained group of people. I mean, whats with this whole going up only to come down thing anyways?
In reply to: I'm in the middle of making a chalk bag out of duct tape.I use that stuff for everything! My philosophy;"It isn't broken, it just lacks duct tape"! It'll at least look original! Totally; duct tape frickin rocks. As a side note, a friend of mine made her jr. prom dress out of duct tape when we were in highschool. There's a fix-it rule of thumb that I go by that pretty much narrows down any repair problem to either being fixed with duct tape or WD-40. If it moves when its not supposed to move, duct tape it. If it ain't movin' and its supposed to, WD-40 it.
