http://www.jeopardy.com/assets/toplogo2.gif Hello everyone! My name is Tennessee Trebec, and I'd like to introduce a trivia thread for beginning climbers. Why beginning climbers? Because I'm not smart enough to think up questions for the old farts. It will have a bit of History, a few Technique questions, and some technical bits and pieces as well. If there is any interest, I'll keep score on the front page right below this post! Think of how you will impress your friends and family when you show them right on the front page of this thread what a climbing buff you are! You will be so cool! I'd like to stress that this thread is for beginning climbers. There will be no questions like: What is the gear beta for the KnifeBlade traverse on Iron Hawk. If you know the gear beta for the KB pitch on Iron Hawk then perhaps you are not a beginner. (Feel free however to give me said beta via PM) Anyway, off to the races. Remember: all Answers must be given in the form of a question. Travis

Here is the first question, we'll start off easy... This climber was the first person to climb the Nose of El Capitan without the use of any direct aid.

Bing Correct One point for Krestkid. Okay here's a Technical Question. This piece of climbing gear was the precursor for the modern sewn harness, and consisted of a piece of tubular webbing tied around the waist, and may or may not have had leg loops.

Bing. point for who the fuck is valdoski. Alright a few more easy ones. This man, who was known for his free climbing prowess died in a tragic accident on the Leaning Tower in Yosemite. He was attempting a record free fall on a "roped jump".

Yes they did use hemp ropes. Rather than making a harness though they simply wrapped the lead rope around their waist several times, then tied it off with a variation of a bowline. I've used this setup when lead climbing in a cave, but I wouldn't suggest it if there is any real possibility of falling. Travis

Ba-BING Correct It needs to be in the form of a question though. That was a tough question, I had to do some research to make sure. One point for Krestkid who now takes the lead. Redpiton is still strugling with a score of negative one. Next question, Staying with the Yosemite FA theme... This route was the first that was climbed to the summit of Half Dome. It was previously thought that no human foot would ever tread on the summit of the "monolith".

Shit, bad question, I forgot about the cable route that that guy set up. I was thinking of Royal Robbins climbing the Northwest face in 1957, but I goofed. Okay, BING. Another point for Krestkid. Next Question, I'll try to make this one better. This organization is directed by Greg Barnes and headed by Chris Mcnamara, and is dedicated to replacing bad bolts on American Climbs.

Doing.. Correct. As Krestkid runs away with the lead. Okay, I'm going to have to start making these harder. This aid climbing device, made with a swage alunimum or copper on a steel cable is commonly referred to as the sickest piece of aid climbing protection ever imagined.

Hans and Yugi is Correct if my information is current. From Hans's website "September 29th Yuji Hirayama and Hans Florine climbed The Nose route in 2 hours, 48 minutes, and 30 seconds." They dethroned Potter and O'neal. That is unless there is a new record? I haven't heard if there was. So Bing for torro the bull, and Bzzz for Climbsomething. Next Question. Spectra is made with a mixture of these materials.

Bing..Climbsomething is correct with Russ Walling Hmm, who'se in the lead, I've got to total up the scores. On to the next question damn, I've got to think up a hard one. Hmmm. In 1957 Royal Robbins, Mike Sherrick, and Jerry Gallwas, made the first ascent of this climb in yosemite.

Bing for the bull. I haven't used google yet, I've got a pile of books lying around here. I had to look up the hans and yugi question though. I really wans't sure after all the wrong answers. Dude, I don't know anything about new england Ice. I might be able to pull some southern ice questions out of my ass if you'd really like. I'll think about mountaineering. I'll tell you what, I'll move the location east a bit. But for now... This bouldering problem is... http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=12437

BaBing for Climbsomething. Okay, here's a southern ICE question for you. The Classic multipitch Ice climb "Starshine" is located on the North face of this North Carolina destination known for it's bold multipitch trad climbs on the 800' southern face.

Nope, On the southern face there is a Climb called the "Original Route" that goes free at 5.11, and is a 10 pitch bitch of a trad climb.

bzzzzt. Okay the climb is on Whitesides mountain NC. Here's the final question for the night. It's easy, so here's your chance... This is the weave that is used to manufacture all modern climbing ropes, Static and Dynamic. It contains a Sheath and a Core.

I'm living in Knoxville now. I run up to the RRG on a pretty regular basis. Late may should not be a problem. I'm making a trip out west around that time, but if I can swing by, I'll run up there an pull on some pockets. Ever climbed Roadside Attraction? It rained the day I carried Trad gear up there. The climb looks classic though. Travis

Alrighty, I'm back. It's a Friday night I think, and I'm sicker than a dawg. I'm still feeling the effects of some black plague I got a couple of months ago. But anyway, mabey it will be a little bit slow around here, and I'll be able to keep up with the replies. The current scores are on the front page for everyone to idolize. (Climbsomething, you must feel SO cool!) Well, I guess I'll kick off another round of "Climbing Jeopardy!"!! This man's accomplishments include holding The Nose speed record, Doing the first Half Dome/El Cap in a day hookup, and Marrying fellow climber hottie Steph Davis.
