vegastradguy, you forgot a few other reasons for Vegas: 1) legalized prostitution in Nye County 2) largest selection of Adult entertainment in any US phonebook 3) naked co-eds that will come to your hotel for a massage (wink-wink) 4) Wayne Newton notice that I have left the good or bad demarcation out. It's all a matter of perspective. Seriously though: Vegas is the largest metro city that is within a six hour drive of more 5 Star world famous climbing areas than any other city. Fortunately, Baskin Robbins still has 31 flavors......

If you enjoy small-town living, Lander, WY, would be an excellent choice. It has tons of world-class sport climbing within 30 minutes, Wind River alpine granite, climable weather year-round, and has more-than-affordable housing. It's the NOLS headquarters and has an excellent climbing community. There are plenty of downsides to any small town, however...

Albuquerque, NM also has relatively cheap cost of living and you should have no trouble finding a teaching job there. IMHO, its by far the most livable big city in the SW (vs. Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson) and NM has a certain charm that AZ seriously lacks. Better plan on being a sport climber though because the trad climbing isn't great (there are about a dozen good trad lines in the Sandias though). The sport climbing is diverse, and receives almost no press. Overall, for diversity and quality, NM has better sport climbing than CO and AZ. There are tons of excellent trails just outside of town (15 min from downtown) for running and moutain biking.

Now couldn't you have just expressed your happiness with where you live without putting down Arizona. You suck dude!

I would say Alaska, because it has the highest teacher salaries in the nation, the most unexplored areas of any state, the most wild country of any state, it's covered in mountains, it has big city or small town or backcountry hermit, whatever is preffered, it has hunting, it has fishing, it has more hiking than you could do in a lifetime, and the list goes on and on...... but I want to save it for myself, so move somewhere else! :D

In reply to: Grand Junction, CO..... ...You may have missed the boat, because developers are turning the area into San Fernando Valley. About 2 years ago, you could have bought a cheap farmhouse. Now, on a teachers salary you are looking at a housing tract. happening just about everywhere.
