I don't think your claim to using the site for oo's own personal gain makes much sense. Granted, I know next to Jack ---- about computers, I would think that pictures stored on one's own computer can be stored at a much higher quality than on this website. That's just a hunch that I have. A great photo is just that, no matter who takes it.

Wait! Whats that smell??? It smells like... Jealousy?

Did one of your photos that you thought kicked booty get smashed by everyone here or something? Cause I am not sure if anyone in the history of this site has been compelled to start a thread about someone's pictures being WAY TO GOOD!   Very curious indeed...

Oh yeah...

In reply to:
I agree. His shots, to me, are cliche and boring.

Then again, so are most of the photos on this site or in the climbing mags. "xxxxx at the crux of xxxxx xxxxxxx (5.xxd)." It really doesn't matter, though, we don't have to like them if we don't want to.

LOL, umm... what do you want to see in the mags or on this site? I personally would love to see an ENTIRE issue or Rock and Ice filled just with Mad Rock Loco and DMM Wirelock ads. But maybe that's just me.

I do not understand what personal gain can be made from puting 300+ professional quality photos on a FREE site for everyone to see when he could be selling them privately. If you want to talk about certain pictures taking up server space there are much more qualified candidates/photographers out there.

When it comes to photography I am nowhere near the skill level of people like Orangeoverhang and climbnow1. And my guess is you might not be either. Why the crap do you start posts like this.

I think you interpreted it the wrong way. There was actually a thread that caused that signature. I posted a thread asking why there were so many trolls on this site. So somone told me to become the "Troll Masta" so I could tame to hordes of trolls that were running rampant at the time.

wow. Of all the things I don't waste my time caring about, "now who's posted the most photos?" And look! I've even stooped to caring about who else cares and then I even responded! That makes me almost lame and that's almost the same as sucky! wow.

i hope you have enjoyed trashing an excellent photographer and insulting the people who like his pictures, for no real reason that makes any sense.

without question, the contributions of orangeoverhang are not nearly as worthwhile as a couple of short little boulder problem butt shots and a string of change the title around threads in community. go get 'em tiger!

It just occured to me that I think tucsonalex has shot himself in the foot here...no offense, dude. After reading through this entire thread, I was just about to do a photo search for orangeoverhang's pictures (I've never seen any of them that I know of). But I wonder how many other people have done the same thing, based on Alex's posting this thread.

It's like companies using "negative" advertising..."This is bad for you" so of course you're going to go look for it. I know that wasn't Alex's intent, but it's just an interesting correlation.

I've never voted on a photo (because I'm not "allowed" to since I haven't posted any myself) and I don't care about rating photos, but if Orangeoverhang weren't posting photos, this site would be seriously lacking high quality action shots.

As far as the idea of storing pictures on the server for "personal gain" goes, its ludicrous. You aren't permitted to submit photo's at a resolution higher than 1600x1600, 512K. I frequently have scanned slides at 5400 dpi, 16bit color with a resulting file size of over 200MB. How 512K of space is going to help, I really don't know. 1600x1600 is great for web viewing, many people don't have screen resolutions higher than 1024. But as far as making a decent sized print goes. It just doesn't cut it. Think things through, or at least have a handle on what it is you're saying before you make accusations. If you don't like a pic, that fine. Go ahead and say so, and maybe you could even be constructive and put a comment on the pic saying why you don't like it and giving a bit of helpful criticism. There are definately a bunch of photos, orangeoverhangs and others that I don't like. And a bunch I do like. Thats no reason to be making personal attacks and accuse people of abusing the site. Especially when a submitted photo has to be approved before it is viewable. If someone was submitting too much junk, I'm sure it would be taken care of.

Neil's photos are awesome, and have convinced me that someday I've got to get to the Grampians.

that said, I do think it would be nice if the front page would reflect the diversity of photos submitted by all users a bit more.

Orangeoverhang is good, and he submits his stuff;

If you have better photos or climb cooler-lookin' climbs, post 'em!

Sure, I feel like I've been to the Grampians, too - in an armchair kind of way - and I think that's kind of cool.

Also, the deal about lemmings committing mass suicide in groups is a big myth sparked by the whim of a long-ago movie director . . . so there!

haha!

What are you doing hanging out at a site full of lemmings, anyway? I haven't even noticed much repetition among the featured climbers;

the old guy rocks, though! Let's learn more about him . . . I hope I'm still climbing when I'm 80!

One of the things I like most about this site are those shots the thug-like 30 year vet HB (Malcolm Matheson), cranking like f#%k in those caves in the Grampians. I remember him from his many trips to Yosemite in the 80's when he was part of the free climbing A-Team of Moffat, Guerin, Schultz, Kurt Smith et al. He also was the first, as far as I know, to produce and sell 1/2 and 3/4 size slcd's, I still have one of these, he sold them out of the Camp 4 parking lot and the batch he brought from his garage in Australia sold out in like 45 minutes. Yet another in the long list of old school tradsters who were on the cutting edge 20 years ago...and who today climb harder than they ever did.

Hey, I started the post and I've been here the whole time.

I was just trying to maybe use a little humor to show that it's not really worth the time to go and start a mud throwing contest over a thing like this. So you were interested in how many photos this one guy has posted... And everyone else was concerned with how much you were concerned with this guy's photos. Who cares? If we all start throwing mud, not only do we all get dirty, we lose a lot of ground... I guess I'm just fascinated with how flame happy people can be these days. How about we talk about which cams are the best some more instead... Oh, wait, there are like 19 other posts doing just that...

I am glad you asked me that, albeit in your condescending manner. I would like to see photos with a modicum of creativity--of variety. I want to see photos of real, down to earth climbers in beautiful settings. To me, a beautiful setting is not a sport route with chalk all over and the draws pre-hung. I'd much rather see someone on a classic 5.6, far away from civilization. I'd much rather see real people on climbs signifying what I love most about the sport. Orangeoverhang's photos are the opposite of that. I have my opinons you have yours. I'm sorry if you or anyone else can't handle that.

I totally agree with that. :D

I am reminded of the "50 favorite Favorite Climbs Of North Amercia" (Even though this contradicts what you said, and what I said I agree with). It shows Chris Sharma climbing his favorite route in Yosemite (Dont remember the name). He is Swinging out over a roof 100's of feet up in the air on TRAD. It was great to see Sharma doing something other than 5.15 sport routes contrasted by his V15 boulder problems. And then there are the countless other beautifull pictures of unnamed and unknown climbers doing a route that few know about.

My problem comes when someone gets on the site and says this:

In reply to:
I don't want this to turn into a debate about whose photos are good and whose suck, it just seems that every other new photo submitted is an orangeoverhang shot. The db says that he currently has 372 photos submitted. Is there a limit to how many photos a user can submit? Do some people milk the site for server space for their own gain?

He had no grounds to imply that OO has submitted too many photos. This site obviously showcases climbing and the images here do speak a thousand words. As far as milking the site for server space, I would love to hear tucsonalex tell us what kind of gain he was reffering to.

I have no problem with anyone on this site. It is a community site where people can come to submit their OPINIONS on everything climbing. But the STATEMENT made by tucsonalex was not very appropriate IMHO. This is how I interpreted his post:

"I know this will start a debate, but I think OrangeOverhang's photos suck and I am sick of seeing a new photo by him everytime I log on. He has 372 photos on here and I think we should start to limit the amount of photos one user can post so they dont make some kind of gain off of the RC.com servers."

Now maybe I just crossed the line but if you come out and single out one person for no REAL reason other than your own personal dislike for his work and turn that into "He is manipulating RockClimbing.com website for the intent purpose of making some kind of personal gain" then you are going to get the whole community replying to this thread in the manner that they have been. Maybe this thread could have been titled "Let's see some diversity among the pictures submitted to RC.com". Sorry if my previous post offended you Raindog, I didn't mean to do that.

Peace out!

I haven't been around very long, and I'm just wondering, how are pics chosen to be displayed on the homepage? I also think a bit more diversity would be nice, but I also love OO's pics. He's an awesome photographer for sure! I posted a pic for myself, so now I can join the lemmings when I'm checkin out his pictures. I didn't wanna be left out!

I just wanted to point out that generally high quality photos are around 6 mb (ok i know thats rough). If he has around 350 pics of high quality on his computer that means that he is looking at a little over 2 gigs of storage. Maybe im just spoiled with technology but 2 gigs is very little on any modern computer. Besides, if I wanted to store my pics why would i store them on someone elses server in a lower quality format where they can disappear depending on the webmasters whim?

I think its great that hes contributing to the site even if it is just for his personal gain. Not all his pictures are going to be great but the critiques that he gets on the site can help him improve and bring better quality images. People dont get better by being to afraid to show others all their work, its the analysis of the bad pics that can often lead to the largest gains in skill.

anyways, just my 2cents... keep up the good work Orange and all the other contributors.
