I just got back from a meeting last night on the PBB this year and found out some important issues that really are not stressed on the web site. Greg Varela has played an integral part of setting the problems this year, so expect some good ones. I even heard mention of a lay-down start problem this year. Good luck  New this year: *Starting holds will be able to be touched or brushed prior to climbing. *Absolutely, positively, no dogs in the festival area or competition area. Unless you want fido to fry in your truck or tied up at the campground the whole weekend, might be best to leave them at home. *$10 charge this year for all spectators (it was $5 last year and $0 the year before). This is due to the all-time sponsorship low and is needed to fund the extra costs. *No more Fish tank  , but there will be a Voodoo Lounge. Dunno what it is, but sounds interesting. *Tug-o-war is gone, but there will be sign ups for a "one-arm crank" Other fun events from the PBB website:
In reply to: "Pyramide Dyno Comp" (5th Annual): 8 Invited Men, 4 Invited Women, 8 Top Men from Qualifier, and 4 Top Women from Qualifier will attempt a variety of dynamic lunges in a one (1) Round Event. Each successful lunge earns a point value; the harder the lunge the higher the point value. An event that is fun to watch especially considering that the competitors are very tired after competing in the BoulderBlast. You will be amazed at just how far some of the climbers will lunge, how they "stick" the target hold, and how they land on the crash pads. Please remember that this event is open only to 2004 Phoenix BoulderBlast "pregistered competitors" who "actively" particpate in the climbing competition. There is no additional charge to particpate. Any and all 2004 Phoenix BoulderBlast "pregistered competitors" (who are not invited) may sign up for the Qualifying Round, 9:00am Sharp Start, Friday, April 23, 2004. The top 8 Men and top 4 Women from the Qualifying Round will join the invited athletes for the regular competition Saturday night. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. For specific information on rules and regulations download or print the following PDF file - http://boulderblast.com/...s/PBB_Dyno_Rules.pdf 1st "One-Arm Crank" Comp: All competitors who pre-qualify on Friday, April 23, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm will particpate in a Final Round on Saturday, April 24, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Registration for Qualifying Round will take place on Friday, April 23, from 8:00am to 2:30pm. The competitor that can do the most one-arm pull-ups will win! This event should be a hit for competitors and spectators alike. Please remember that this event is open only to 2004 Phoenix BoulderBlast "pregistered competitors" who "actively" particpate in the climbing competition. There is no additional charge to participate. Prizes will be awarded to the First (1st) Place Winner. For specific information on rules and regulations download or print the following PDF file - http://boulderblast.com/...BB_One_Arm_Rules.pdf Climbing Magazine's Bouldering Photo Clinic Climbing Magazine's Photo Editor, Zach Reynolds, and Editor, Jeff Achey will host a clinic on bouldering photography. The clinic is open to 15 participants and will focus on the basics of camera operation, light, exposure, and other important topics of photography, as well as the important aspects of shooting bouldering -- angle, action, composition, timing, and more. This is a chance to get insight on how pro photographers work and instruction on how to improve your skills as a photographer. Bring a camera for hands on instruction as the class heads into the field. The clinic concludes with a visual tour of bouldering photography in a classroom-style setting. The clinic is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Friday, April 23rd and will last the majority of the afternoon and early evening. To sign up contact Scott Leonard at 970-704-2614 or email sleonard@climbing.com. Participation is on a first come, first serve basis. For more specific information - download or print the following PDF file - http://boulderblast.com/...ing_Photo_Clinic.pdf The North Face Clinic, "Transferring Skills from Plastic to Rock" by Lisa Rands Do gym rats make great rock jocks! Bouldering from the indoors to the outdoors with success. Lisa Rands, will discuss and demonstrate how to transfer your skills, techniques and tricks from the consistency of the gym environment to the inconsistency of natural rock in the outdoors. Increase your V grades and have fun doing it. The Access Fund present the "Boulder Project" featuring Katie Brown "Next season," we tell ourselves as we sip our last cup of joe at the Kava Coffeehouse before heading down Highway 395 out of Bishop. But, what if "next season" our boulder project is inaccessible, not open, closed due to impacts? The Boulder Project, a national initiative driven by the climbing industry, land managers, local activists and climbers, is working to ensure bouldering projects remain open and accessible not only until we've sent our projects, but for future boulderers, as well. Ultimately the Boulder Project is a way of life, a way of thinking, making choices, building relationships, and taking action that stretches well beyond bouldering. Come celebrate the kick-off of this exciting project with your favorite boulderers, a slide show, and some thumping tunes. I can't wait! I look forward to this all year... So, WHO'S GOING?? :D ~Erica

Be careful with that Neon on the road into Oak Flat. You may have ground clearance issues. And don't tell the folks at the car rental place that you were out 4 wheelin' in the rental.

Thanks for the advice. I remember beating up the rental last year because those roads around the campgrounds are crazy! I think ill just park it and walk it into camp! My luck, i would rip the oil pan off in one of those crazy potholes in oak flats! Those potholes are big enough to boulder out of!

i REALLY want to go, but i have a prior obligation to lead another climbing trip for my work. i heard a rumor that this might be the last year they have it, due to finding a huge copper deposit on the grounds, they want to shut it down to mine  i hope that's not the case, or at least not for another few years (so i can go next year)

I heard the same thing about the copper deposit underneath. That would be really sad if they closed the climbing areas used in the PBC. I went last year to the comp and have been looking forward to this years event ever since. Its like the Woodstock of the climbing community! What better way to spend your time then by climbing all day and drinking all night with fellow climbers...not to mention the sweet vendor booths!!! Anyway, at least this year is still on... 17 more days...woohoo!!

In reply to: climberchic- My height- 4'10" Weight- 215 and growing SSN- I'm not worth anything so this is unnecessary Voting for-Ross Perot Thanks Tyler. You may now join us at the comp. But.....dear god. In the name of everything holy, please do not ask me to spot you. For all you other folks interested in the copper issue, more here: http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=49528 Go straight to the end for the latest. And it will be several years before they close that area off. They are still in the feasibility study stage, but this is the time to get active....not when the start putting up tape.

BEWARE OF THIEF AT PBB!!! This posted from another thread:
In reply to: Justa heads up to all the folks headed to the boulder blast - three of our gear packs were stolen by a guy in a beat up old white pickup (older ford chevy, square body) with a diamond plate metal tool box and maybe a water tank in the bed. He is cruising the campground - so if ya see him, report him or do not buy anything! he might also be an ebay user under sukhdev. he has a 3-4 yr old daughter and a med sized white dog. thanks steve ps, thanks to all of you out there that drove us to town and helped out!!! Beers on us, (if we get our wallets back!) People like this suck. Please make sure to lock up your gear in your car.

Noel and crimpandgo~ Yes and yes! :) We will be camped in the open field behind the campground. I drive a silver 4Runner. Feel free to come on down and camp with us! Earlier the better....that field is full by Friday. As for the "official" RC.com spot....I guess that would be the RC.com table. (If there is going to be one). Right now we have no one to staff it. Anyone interested? Erica

Awesome :D I will keep a lookout . another silly question. Do the climbs get changed from year to year? I assume the competion this year is in the Oak flats bouldering area. It was there two years ago. Will the climbs be the same as two years ago? or do they change them each year?

They change from year to year. You will get a packet when you sign in if you are competing. It think it's probably ok at this point to tell you that it is in the same place as 2 years ago :)

Cool. I know its hush hush. I have competed the last two years and had a blast. I was just wondering how useful looking through the old booklets from two years ago would be. I felt like I wasted too much time last year finding the climbs that I could work. Oh well guess I should have climbed less of the mine area in the last couple of months huh? :?

Hey Erica, I think Jim is roping off the valley behind the campground for only vendors and their cars. crimpandgo- Yes looking through the old guides should help you. I did change a bunch of problems. I could tell you which ones they are... but I think I will let you see for yourself on Friday when you pick up your packet. :D Part of the fun on Friday is looking through the booklet to see what has changed. Almost 600 competitors registered so far. Looks like it is going to be another incredible party. Greg

for those mourning the demise of the FISH tank, don't worry - the folks at VOODOO take their drinking seriously!

Thanks Arizonabouldering :D one of my favorite parts of going to the competition is seeing what goodies we get in the packet :) I started packing my stuff last night. I am stoked ! :D

hey erica - we have a huge group and will probably be camping near the intersection of the loop road and the main 4x4 road. make sense? there's usually a port-o-john at that intersection. would be nice to have you and your cronies nearby. gogo is heading out this morning to grab the spot. eric

That's correct Eric. Go is on her way - well as early as early starts get for her. There will be about 12 people in our little happy camper group so we should be pretty easy to find. No monster camp Tre this year though. I think we've got enough alcohol to emulate our own fish tank this year. Anyone interested feel free to stop by and say hello..

Eric, You're coming down! Right on! We'd love to camp by you fine folks if that's possible. We have about 10 'cronies' right now. Would that be too crowded? I'll ask Ivan if he knows where that spot is. We're heading out tonight to grab spots. :)

More reminders from the PBB website:
In reply to: 2004 Pbb - Important Notices / Reminders 04-06-2004 Please observe the following suggestions, restrictions, and guidelines: ~The 2004 PBB will not serve the traditional "Mexican" buffet this year because of the lack of sponsorship dollars. Bring lots of money for on-site caterers and for vendors! The PCC regrets this, but it cannot be helped. ~ NO dogs and/or pets will be allowed in the campground, vending area, or competition site. If you bring a pet, you must keep them at your campsite and on leash. ~Make sure that you bring plenty of water (the only water at PBB will be water that vendors are selling) and bring camping materials and clothes for warm and cold temps. Oak Flat is notorious for drastic temperatures changes from day to night. ~ Bring picture ID that clearly states your age. You need this for On-Site Check-In and for "drinking" alcoholic beverages. If you look young, you WILL BE "carded" when drinking or attempting to get beer from New Belgium or alcohol from the VooDoo Lounge. ~If you bring alcoholic beverages with you, please make sure they are in plastic or can containers. Do NOT bring glass containers! The PCC highly recommends that you camp Saturday night as AZ DPS will have a sobriety check-point set up and/or many DPS officers in the vicinity specifically looking for drunk drivers leaving the 2004 PBB. If you must drive Saturday night, please consider NOT drinking or having a "designated" driver. ~ The Spectator Fee will be $10.00 for the 2004 PBB.

Also, if you're into the boo-koo vendor deals, consider this offer from Evolv/Yosemite Bum: -------------------------------------- Buy a pair and donate an old pair of used climbing shoes and you'll get $20 off retail price. And you'll get a free resole (in form of a coupon) on these shoes when the time comes, worth $23 (rands and shipping are extra). We will collect the donated (aka "trade-in") shoes and fix them up and donate them to charity or non-profit groups in need of shoes. our most recent donation was Outdoor Outreach in San Diego (where Meg/roseriae) works. we gave them 20 pairs and will give 20 more this month. So, people would buy the $89 shoes at $69 but get a $23 resole coupon for when their shoes wear out. ------------------------------------- Sound sweet to you, too? Ya, I thought so :) Evolv is hooking up with rock_diva's shop, Over the Crux, for this event and will give to a charity of Shelley's choice too. So it's a warm 'n fuzzy deal all around. *end plug* :)

As the field is roped off, we secured sites behind the rock flats right after the open field. It is exactly 3/10 mile down the first turn off from Magma Mine Rd on the left. Come by and say hi!

I can't imagine why not, Ed. He has put so much time and effort into his company, I would imagine that he would show up at an event of this magnitude.
