Today is probably my last day before actually hitting the BC again soooo.
This week so far it looks like Skibs and myself are going for it. It's looking like some weather may be coming in, so I would rather not go through a suffer fest on a 14er. Lot's of wind above treeline, poor visibility etc. Sounds great for a mountaineering experience but kind of sucky with a board or skis (read: sail) on your back. So Butler Gulch with the 8:30 meeting place of the Last General Store?
Anyone else going to get in?
Derec?
Lisa?
Bueller?
Anyone?

Well, Saturday was an excellent day once again. The snow back in BG is more like January conditions right now vs November! I rode my split, and didn't hit a dang thing. Did the hourglass and the chute skiers left off of summit. Well over a foot of new fluff in the chutes. It was a blast. Unfortunately the secret is out and there were about 20-30 people back there. Although there was plenty of snow to go around, it was more like a ski area than a backcountry trip. I suppose just about anywhere near the Front Range is going to have that story. I am going to try to hit Berthoud on Tuesday. Anyone want to join in?

Hey KC, glad to here you had a good time out! I ended doing the the commercial thing since my friend doesn't have any gear. Yeah, wish I had more week days off too!

It was a lot of fun and I happened to hook up with a new rc.com'er, Pdiddy. Although I was a little bummed by the high numbers there, it made it real easy for me to hook up with some very cool people to tour with. Let me know if you need gear for you or a friend if you are thinking about coming out on a tour. I can often borrow a beacon or two, and shovels.

Killclimbz and I met randomly in the parking lot at BG for a day of backcountry fun. My friend (no cute alias) and I benefited from KC's intimate knowledge of the BG area and enthusiasm. We also met Kim from the Backcountry Snowusers Alliance (BSA). BSA lobbys on behalf of non-motorized users where ever user conflicts exist (Rabbit Ears, Vail Pass, Wolf Creek Pass, Jones Pass/ BG etc.). If you are interested in preserving non-motorized BC experiences for everyone then JOIN, or attend the BSA Backcountry Bash at the REI flagship store on 12/3 at 7pm. Tix are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Avery Brewery will provide some sumptuous beer for the lucky attendees...

Great post on the Backcountry snowsport alliance, they are definitely about preserving non-motorized areas for backcountry enthusiast. I believe the stat is something like 70% of the backcountry areas are accessible to motorized traffic (aka snowmobiles). The other 30% is non-motorized. The snowsports alliance is all about keeping it this way and working out compromises where both users share the areas.

Sweeeeet! :D It's good to have one of those.
I was up at Berthoud Pass yesterday, just riding the old ski area since my dummy buddy forgot to bring a beacon :? . Most of the runs have been had but we found a couple that for what ever reason, have been forgotten since the area closed. Freshies galore once again! The North chutes on Mt Russell look very filled in and there are some tracks running down them. I am going to try to get up there Fri, maybe Saturday and get some turns down them. It's either do them now or wait till spring. Anyone interested for Friday?
Saturday, I have to drop Kim off at the airport a little before 9. After that I was going to head up the hill. I was thinking Berthoud, but I am game for other areas like Butler Gulch or someplace new. Anyone else thinking of doing something on Sat?

Hmmm, a full moon ride. Doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. Where were you thinking? Butler Gulch wouldn't be a bad place, but neither would Loveland or some other spots. I could be in, depending on weather and snow coverage. Obviously it's dependent on clear skies.
Ok, how about tomorrow? Anyone want to get out Friday, there is some seriously cool stuff that can be done at Berthoud, but bad weather is supposed to be coming in Saturday and it may be too sketch to go up on the divide then. Anyone? Bueller?
How about Saturday, I have to start a little late, but I am still planning on getting out. Skibby you in? Anyone? please...

Yeah, I think it's the snow as well. I threw out Bierstadt and they didn't bite on that one. I'll probably just head with them the RMNP to see elk and hike some easier stuff, but at least they can be in the mountains!

Clear skies is a must, I was thinking Loveland or Berthoud Pass. Head up after work on Fri. and spend a few hours on the snow. I also want to ski that weekend as well, so if you have any other ideas chime in. Are you still thinking about Monarch if conditions are good? Someone on TTips posted about rocks on every turn. :?

Yeah, I caught that same post. I also did get the feeling that maybe this guy was trying to discourage people from going down there as much as possible. I've seen a few other posts around the web from people that have been down there. It didn't sound so bad. If they get some of the snow they are talking about this weekend, it could change things dramatically. Monarch tends to get more than it's fair share of snow. It freaking dumps there.
Berthoud or Loveland would be fine with me for a full moon excursion. I'm wondering if more snow (hopefully it will have) needs to be on the ground by then, but I am good. Do you know what time the moonrise is supposed to be that night?

Hey KC, when you were up on Berthoud yesterday did you get an idea of the conditions on the north side of the pass, say 7 mile run or current crk? And RE: moonlight tour (11/26), my friend and I will probably (95% certainty) will be in the Wolf Creek area over Thanksgiving and may be interested in touring to the Rainbow hot springs for a dip under the full moon if anyone is interested in joining us drop me a PM.

I dropped the eighties and the rock garden on the North Side. Conditions were pretty decent. I haven't been down 7mile yet, but I am pretty sure it is passable as there were tracks going down the propeller (the chute just north of Mines 1) and that runs you into 7 mile and the bottom. There is white covering all the way to the top of the divide which is impressive. Usually it's blown off up there. The North side of current creek is looking pretty bare. You might be able to get some turns on the teacup bowl on the far skier's right side, but that looks to be about it. Does that cover it for ya? 8^)
Are you thinking about getting out Saturday on the pass? I am definitely looking for some partners.

Thanks for the update, yes we are assembling a minor posse of snow riders to harvest some turns on Saturday. We haven't chosen a destination yet, hence the inquiry about pass conditions. We might be game to head up in that direction again, but I would have to review with the rest of the team and see what their preferences are.
