yeah, I don't know about protecting you on a trad lead, but it sure looks like it could proctect you very well in a dark alley at night (although you might want to use black tape instead or red for camo purposes =)

I tried that once and went back to the ordinary method. The stiffness promotes insecurity and negates the advantage of usualy not having to put a runner on them when they are threaded the conventional way. Don't think knot strength is an issue. There may be an advantage for the smallest size or two where it makes it act like a wire and makes placing easier, but not for anything larger.

Thanks Everybody for your interest, esoteric1 - my larger sized hexs are slung in the more traditional style with the knot inside the hex. edge - Glad someone had used this knot, so i'm not being completely foolish. or if i am i'm in good company :) . the tube is really thin nylon stuff it doesn't at as much as a mm to the diametre of the cord, so i'm hopeing that the profile won't be much different. nheston - i would get wired hex were i buying new ones, but i already have these :) I'm not particuarly worried about the strenght of the knot itself, i don't believe that the extra strand of cord through the middle will weaken it, infact its possible the slight increase in the radius of curve in the turns may make the knot stronger. I am considering the possiblity that slipage could result in excessive nylon on nylon movement, but in this situation i doubt it. And yes i know i'm gambling with my life, but i'm not the first person to and i am not encourageing anyone else to be involved. (except possibly my climbing partner, but he's done silly things to risk my life in the past, so he can take care of himself :) ) brianinslc - not being able to use a hex as an emergancy QD is one solid indisputable one for the pros' list. It is a toss up between freedom vrs stiffness. i'm only thinking this might be good for the smaller ones, better for placing where it harder to get fingers/hands in to place it. edge - how the knot keeps the sling together is what attracted me to this in the first place. the tubing was a secondary idea to prevent the (unlikely) event of clipping into the sling between the hex and the knot, which could result in loading the two strand comming from the same side of the knot, pulling the whole loop through and undoing the knot. paulraphael - i agree that knot testing results in weird and unexpected results, hence my caution. moof - it's nylon so double fisherman should be suffiencent, and the tails are a bit short, but i havent tightneed it up real tight yet, in fact since that picture ive changed it a bit. thegreytradster - making the sling to stiff and requiring an extra sling is also a pro. everyone who stated hexes should be thrown out - i'm waiting for the new cams to turn up in the mail :)
