It seems as though it just depends on what people like better, though if your a gym climber then your not really a rock climber, your just a plain climber, stupid little technicality I guess. The point is if you just climb in the gym then thats the best, if you climb outdoors or are training for outdoors then the gym helps but outdoors is better.

I enjoy the gym because it is such a good workout, but it is too expensive for me. ROCK on!

The only thing I like the gym for is the convenience it offers me to be able to go after work. But nothing can replace the real thing.

I actually prefer climbing in the gym. Sure, I live close to some great outdoor climbing destinations in Utah, and I do get outside for training sometimes, but really, I just love getting in to the gym! The sights, of all those brightly colored plastic holds, and shrieking little kids running around... the smells, of years of disguting sweaty climbers with horrible feet stained into the padded ground... the sounds of people grunting, shrieking, cursing, and talking about their latest V-whatever accomplishment... the feel of the plastic holds... I mean really, how CAN you compare the two? The gym is so obviously superior! I mean, do you have a water fountain at your favorite trad crag? No! Do you have a weight lifting bench at that great bouldering spot? No! Is there currently a birthday party going on at that sport climbing destination you've been dying to get to? No! Yes, as you can obviously see.... climbing outside is fun and all, but nothing beats the gym! Steve P.S. 4 pages and I'm the first person to reply with an unconstructive and sarcastic post? You guys are slipping.

The whole point of a gym is to simulate real rock walls. I would say that your always better sticking with the original. Nothing can compare to good ol' mother nature

In reply to: The only thing I like the gym for is the convenience it offers me to be able to go after work. I am so lucky to live closer to decent real rocks than to the gym. The only part that needs some getting used to is finishing the day and collecting my gear in the dark on a headlamp. So far I twice forgot some of it on the spot and had to stop by the next morning before work to clean it.

I can't really see the point in gyms if there's an alternative - especially one that's free. I've never been to one, though, and there's something I've wondered: isn't it a bit weird that the holds are all very clear - since they're coloured plastic mounted on wood? Kind of takes the fun out of wondering what to use to move further up the rock, I'd think.

In reply to: i can just give you my opinion... gym climbing is only training for real rock for me. you can train better in a controlled enviroment. but NOTHING comes close to climbing real rock. the experience is just so much better it cant be explained by words. you need to experience it yourself. Yep!!!!! :righton: Nothing can replace the real rock!!!!!!

As of yet I've ONLY climbed in a gym... I freakin' love it though. I haven't climbed outside yet because I don't have my own rope/draws, or know anyone who does. I can't wait 'til I get out on the real thing though (from what I've heard)... I'm totally keen to try some trad. Maybe socialclimber, you can help me out. You're a chchian, right?

I climbed for quite a few years in the gym only and never went outside for the same reasons--no gear, didn't know how to approach it, etc. Then I finally took a 2 day class. Let me tell you one thing: the money for the class plus the gear (rope on sale, couple of lockers, some slings, static line, books) is far less than the money I spent for day passes and memberships in the gym. I should have gone out a lot sooner than I did! A warning, however. Once you start, there is no stopping, and now the extra money that went into (and are still going into) a lead rack is probably way more than the gym fees. And so is the satisfaction. The gym is a good starting place, but don't get stuck in it for too long.

all i do is climb in gym, and a crappy one at that, but Nebraska isn't relay set up for outdoor climbing, all we have is flat land and rednecks. I would love to go do some real rock climbing.

In reply to: I would love to go do some real rock climbing. Have you ever checked out Palisades SD or Blue Mounds MI? They are about 2 hours away from Omaha, but good for beginners to boulder around on. You could probably even take a ride up someone Else's rope if you wanted. They are pretty nice around there!
