What is the best country for a climber to expatriate to? I'm NOT just interested in which country has the best climbing out side the US. Some where that speaks english would be nice (Australia, UK, New Zealand, Canada, and maybe even Iceland). Mexico may is even a very valid consideration. Don't bother suggesting 3rd world countries, anywhere in Africa, places with travel restrictions to the US, and the such.

I prefer some good Trad Climbing but would be fine cliping bolts in europe or working boulders.

The south island of New Zealand is pretty sweet. There is a vast amount of rock here in all grades, trad and sport, and even the winter allows climing year around. The only thing that is a bit lacking is many multi-pitch, but there are a few around.

This is an entertaining read about your options if renouncing your citizenship is in the cards. . .

Australia- climb 365 days a year in Sydney, endless new routes both trad and sports, but there's 20000 good repeats to do between FA's. Good trips to other states (which have fab climbing, but you wouldn't want to reside in because of weather).

Problems
- we don't speak English
- the rest of the world is a long way away

Looks like NZ and Austrailia are sounding good.

http://www.commondreams.org/views04/1103-29.htm was an interesting link, not too helpful. I'd rather not spend my reserves of $1.3 million on residence on a Cruise ship. And while it was kinda discouraging.

I'm more concerned with just leaving right now, I'll worry about citizenship later on.

Norway is good but expensive. There is ice, rock, skiing, and a sociaist government that will feed and clothe you while they process your paperwork and you climb.

Actually my wife, and I hope to spend a couple years overseas when the kids are older and I have the same requirments; english speaking and good climbing.

Don't forget about Cape Town, South Afica. It is ringed by 700' cliffs with gondola access, is right on the ocean and has wild big walls further inland in SA. And, you're in Africa which would be pretty cool in itself.
One of my best friends from Alaska spent 7 years there and loved it.

What is it about Americans that make us utter silly responses to people who no loner want to live in our country?

From the "love it or leave it chants" during vietnam, to making fun of Alec Baldwin.... the middle/right of America just cant seem to decide if they want people to leave, or if they want to make fun of people who want to leave.

Given the history and origins of our Nation one would think we would have the utmost respect for those people who want to leave their homeland to flee oppression or pursue their dreams or to look for a brighter future. Afterall.... thats what every single one our ancestors did.

As to the original question. New Zealand or Belize would be my choices.

Canada. :D

Similar culture, but with less fear, less cultural segregation and more compassion for your fellow man.

But higher taxes.

The climbing is great, the west being the best.

If you’re a skilled trades person, or are willing and capable of starting your own business. We'd love to have you.

If you stick around long enough and want to start voting, you can vote for the NDP (think Ralph Nader, but with the real possibility of getting elected).

Oh my God dude, lighten up! If you get on a website and ask deep, thought probing questions, you had better expect a variety of answers from sardonic to short and critical to humorous. AND you should be ready to tolerate it. If you can't shift through the sh*t, then don't complain about it. Not everyone will be on the same page. I suggest you subject yourself to a couple of hours of Southpark episodes...that should cure you right up!

And so what are you doing?... how about you take your own advice and lighten up, tolerate, and "shift" (sic) through my post? Wee bit hypocritical to challenge me on my post, by telling me I shouldnt challenge someone else's.... no?

Besides, I was really just making a point - about it being funny that, given the origin of our country, people have the gall to deride those looking to move out of it.

Personally, in my opinion, expecting a variety of answers to a question on these boards is one thing....

Being told to not let the door hit your ass when you inquire about moving out of the country.... is something else. Tolerate it?... yes. Allow it to go unchallenged?... never.

An episode of South Park might be a nice recipe for apathy...thanks for the advice. But I think I'll pass on that and continue to challenge my fellow Americans when they act and sound like the ugly Americans we are sometimes portrayed to be.

Good call. I bet now that freedom and democracy have been brought to Iraq that it is a great, really nice place to move to...

I hear that after this term, Bush is relocating the ranch there...

ok ok, if people don't have acutal suggestions, don't bother posting to this forum. People clearly have opinions on the direction of the country. (some being more valid than others, true).

I was just hoping people who have climbed in in other countries and saw things they would like would pass on on some good beta.

(I'm taking my job with me, thank you very much)

Hong Kong is a very accomodating place for expatriates, considering it was governed by Britain for the past hundred years, local Hong Kongers speak good english and won't chase you out of your house with a spear. The only downside is that living expenses can be on the steep side (very friggin' steep, if not overhanging  ) But, the atmosphere is good, the food is good, the culture is good, the city is good, the countryside is good and the climbing is very varied and most damn fine. If not here, then Australia or New Zealand is another option, but who could be around so many "Gwei Lo's"?

So true.
Bear in mind though, that we have six months of winter, so if you're not into skiing or ice-climbing it's not the place to go.
