bump gets your topic to the top of the "recent messages" part of the home page of RC.com. you don't have to say bump though you could say "i like popsicles" and that would get your subject there too.

My girlfriend is a new rc.comer, and she asked about this the other day too. I've been posting on here for awhile and I wasn't for sure...

But it is to 'bump' the post back on to the front page. Like, when something new is posted even if it's just 'bump' it gets the thread back onto the frontpage.

New threads appear at the top of the page. As people reply to other threads, the concerned thread gets moved down, until it's so low that no one bothers to look at it. So the OP posts a blank message to "bump" it back to the top of the page.

Sometimes threads get lost in the fray of other highly active threads and the OP wants someone to answer. Usually considered bad form.
