Well, first you have to find the middle. There's a thread around here somewhere about finding the length of the rope....a number of techniques are mentioned in it. Edited to add: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...forum_view_collapsedThe thread I mentioned.

I cut notches starting a foot out from center that get progressively deeper until they hit the center.

Piss on it. The smell of stale urine will inform you every time the center of the rope passes through your belay device.* *The executives of JR inc. do not accept any responsibility for anybody being a retard and actually following this advice.

Tie a knot in the middle. You need to practice passing knots anyway, what better way to do it then while belaying a leader?

Tie one end to a tree and one end around your neck and jump off a cliff. If the rope breaks it should be about the half way point. If it doesn't then it's probably not important.

This is the beginner section. Why does everyone call a beginner a troll. When I started to post, I replied to a thread from 2001. The easiest way to mark the center of your rope is to buy one that changes patterns in the middle. This is also the most expensive way to mark your rope. I think the sharpe idea is great, waterproof, won't wash off and easy.

For having over 3400 posts I'll be nice. Tie an EDK (good for practice) using both ends of the rope. Then find the other end. Mark with a Sharpe TEC marker. You want a Zylene based marker as recommended by a few rope manufacturers. The TEC is just that, zylene based, with a few more additives to make it vitually perminant. Mark at least a foot long section in the middle. Some prefer a longer section. Then if you want to get real fancy you can mark both ends of the rope the last 10 feet or so every foot. It's a quick reminder that you are getting close to running out or at least closer to your stopper knots.

I would have to agree that this is the best permenent way of marking the center. Though I would like to add that a knot 5 feet on either side of the center knot will alert you to the fact that the center knot is coming up. I hate it when that center sneaks up on me. Almost passed this one up.

I forgot that when I marked my non-dry rope I went ahead and marked my dry rope in thirds for a two man rope team. It makes roping up so much faster.

Adk wrote: Mark with a Sharpe TEC marker... The zylene or other chemicals in that type of marker won't weaken the rope or damage it? Is it available at an office supply shop or is it specifically for climbing ropes? I can't just use a regular sharpie, I am guessing. Dan

Apparently I still have some to learn about posting on forums, so I'd like to change my answer to the question. It really works better to tie a figure eight with a bight and then clip two biners to the loop. That way when you go to rapel all you have to do is clip the biners on to the anchor. Its a double bonus for your leader because he can tie into both ends for double the safety.

find a marker that wont compromise the durability of the rope or use some colored dental floss and stitch it through the sheath of middle of the rope.
