So I've just found out that I may have AVM ... and am going for an MRI to determine whether or not this is the case. Does anyone know anything about this defect, other than that it causes strokes? Thanks! :)

Sorry to hear that... I know a little, but I'm sure you've probably learned more than I know by now. PM me if you want to hear what my text books (primarily about strokes) have to say. Hopefully the MRI will show an easy to clip AVM. J

mtbgirlie, are you sure you're not talking about a patent foramen ovale (PFO)? An AVM is an abnormal collection of blood vessels, classically in the brain. Normally, blood flows from arteries to capillaries and then to veins. In an AVM, arteries connect directly to veins and this creates high pressures that cause the vessels to become deformed. kasharp, I missed this post the first time around but you can PM me if you have any general questions (your doc is probably a better resource though as he or she knows you in real-life!)
