If nothing is done. I think that Hueco will be closed forever. I am not sure what we need to do to stop the wheels of change here, but everyone needs to know that this is coming and will probably become more common if allowed to continue.

Basically, the Historical Society is taking ownership of several Texas parks and Hueco is on the list. Once control is transferred, we will no longer be able to climb there. Wheels are already turning and it is unclear if we can do anything to stop it.

On HuecoTanks.com the article dated 1.21.07 is very scary and gives a lot of great information and resources to try and help but, on HuecoRockRanch.com there is an article dated 1.22.07 that explains that Hueco is not currently on the list to be transferred...

Either way, we need to be doing something! The list of 21 Historical Sites for possible transfer had a criteria that they did not have any outdoor facilities and no need for law enforcement so Hueco Tanks was not on that list. BUT the chairman of THC, John Nau, wants Hueco Tanks and Seminole Canyon as well.

These are the people to WRITE to:
Chente Quintanilla:
http://www.house.state.tx.us/...st75/quintanilla.htm
Eliot Shapleigh:
http://www.shapleigh.senate.state.tx.us/

WHEN you write to them, please stress the following points:
• TPWD is doing a splendid job managing Hueco - (and all Texas state historic sites).
• Vegetation is returning, and there’s no recent damage to rock art or archaeological sites.
• Climbers hold trash pick-up days.
• Climbers, birders, wildlife lovers, and picnickers — not history buffs — represent the majority of visitors.

The Access Fund is also launching a Save Hueco Tanks Campaign. Find out more at AccessFund.org. None of us wants to lose this amazing place but we will if we just ignore it and hope someone else will write! Take a few minutes and write. If we can turn enough heads we will have more than a few weeks left to climb at Hueco and possibly a few years.
