Umm...what are you expecting to win an open division with those kind of numbers? You could certainly win the spray division for rc.com postings.

That depends on what you mean by "ready."

I would say go for it. Your first comp you have to enter in the lowest divison, your probably place really well if you can do V5's and 6'es. you don't have anything to loose go have fun.

All of the competitions I have entered are more aimed at "having fun" rather than actual winning and loosing.

If you're leading 5.11a in 3.5 months then I dont understand why you have to ask?

Just remember. In life there are no loosers, just 2nd, 3rd and 4th WINNERS!

2nd place is the first loser.

On the other hand, The best climber is the one having the most fun -- alex lowe

I've done a few comps, and my advice is to just avoid them. My take is: why spend three times what I would normally pay to go to a gym, then be under a whole slew of rules and what not, just to have the chance get a ribbon I that says "first place" that I could have bought at a party store for 25 cents? I don't want to see other climbers as my adversaries.

The only time comps are worth it are if you could be winning cash prizes (or climbing gear prizes). Otherwise, I always get left with an empty feeling.

Then again, if you are into climbing for the competitive aspect, go nuts. I climb to best myself, not other people, so I'm not surprised I don't like competing (that and I suck anyways :p )

This depends entirely on whether or not you are old enough to enjoy the beers afterwards. If not then you should wait.
If there are no beers than it is not worth entering.

Maybe we should ask him if he really was ready then :p
Besides, I'm sure he's up to 5.14's in his gym by now :)

same here. its all about having fun.

Me and some friends, went on a road trip to Kingston-Boiler Room Indoor Rock climbing because Queens Climbing Club held an open Top Roping Competition.

I was beginner, since I have not competed at all, but I already boulder for few months. Few sessions on top roping and that's it.

We came out for fun, and majority of us won door prizes. Competition was fun, food, t-shirts, and I won the beginner category, my prize was a new harness, which was pretty sweet.

I just learned that I can climb flash 5.80, but not 5.90.

So, it all depends on the kind of competition. The QCC competition is about fun and just hanging out with other climbers in the area. Entry was only $15 with food and t-shirt and fun prizes.

On the other hand, Tour De bloc 5 was held in Coyote Gym. it was $40 fee. When I look at the poster, I think it was only for those pro, and $40 was too much for me to pay as a spectator.

Why not, go for it and see what happens. Comps usually get me way psyched on climbing harder in the future.
