Here's a photo I took of Rich Borgman at Horsetooth in 1968. He and I discovered and developed Horsetooth bouldering in the period 1967-1970. I went to the gym on the CSU campus and asked if any gymnasts were climbers. Rich was a sidehorse man, and took to bouldering like a fish to water. Later, married and with small children, he became a missionary, spending many years in Africa and working with Charles Colson (how many of you recognize this name?) on prisoner rehabilitation. His dedication to anything he undertook was phenomenal. He is now in his early 60s.

Nice pic. Is he on an established problem in Horsetooth? Haven't heard the name associated with anything but climbing. Is he still an active climber - did he do anything in Africa?

That boulder problem--and the one right next to it--are really nice. Sometimes you need scuba gear to start them, depending on the water level in the reservoir.

Rich quit climbing when he became a missionary (early 1970s?). He devoted his considerable energies to saving souls and rehabilitating prisoners in Africa, then in France. Charles Colson (sp?)- remember Watergate?

I was in awe of your problems in the late sixties and early seventies @ Horsetooth and I still am!

Thanks, Jeff. Rich had actually done some climbing before converting to the Poetry of Mountaineering. He was climbing the east face of Longs Pk. in winter in the mid 1960s, bundled up in a large down parka. A piece of ice or rock gave way and he fell all the way down the lower face below Broadway, ending up on a boulder above Chasm Lake. He suffered a few minor injuries, but the bulky parka and his light weight(he was very thin) saved his life.

Yes, Meghan, I understand it's gone. Actually, I heard that much of the rest of the bouldering at Horsetooth has been made less accessible or non-accessible recently, with construction going on at at least one of the earth dams. As an ol' timer my favorite spot is now the roadcut (Torture Chamber), and that was out of bounds earlier this year.
