How many....?

Hey guys!

My parents just asked me what I want for christmas Wink, so naturally I said climbing gear. They asked what specifically.

So I have

5 locking 'biners (how many more should I have, 3 are on belay devises)

8 assorted non locking (how many more should I have, this does not include biners used in racking)

Set of Camalots: 5-.75 and a .4 (should I get a full set, what should I get doubles on?)

~5 24" sewn runners, and assorted cordelette, like a 40' length of 8mm cordellete (Should I get more, thinking about maybe a longer sewn runner)

Full set of BD stoppers (not the REALLY baby ones, but you know)

1-7 hex's

What else should I get?

Thanks!

-CS

You'll want to end up with 10 or 12 slingdraws/extendo's if you're looking to get into longer trad routes or alpine climbing.

Do you have a rope?

Yup, I have a rope, and hopefully getting another one as we often go in a fairly large group. They mostly wanna get me little stuff like biners, and maybe a cam or too, but I also need advise for christmas money Smile So How many more biners should I get, and also what should I double up on as far as cams go?

Two thoughts:

1. if you are expecting to get ALL that, you have a heck of a wealthy parents. Are they looking to adopt, by any chance? I won't ask for that much...

2. How the heck would we know what you need? What do you already have? What do you climb? what do you plan to climb? And if you don't know what you need, do you really need it?

It was my understanding that that was a list of what he already possesses, and was wondering what to ask him parents for to complete his rack.

I didn't see any quickdraws on your list of gear. I would recommend getting a few of varied lengths. The alpine draws are pretty nice too.

On a long trad route I can configure some of the sewn slings and some loose biners. I also end up settion up a TR for the rest of the group so thats why the loose biners. And I forgot to mention, I have like a dozen quickdraws.

Any advise on quantity of biners (i.e. how many locking how many non locking &c.)?

Skip the .3. It's fucking worthless. Get a set of tricams, pink to blue. Get some DMM offset nuts and maybe some peenuts. Buy TCU's not C3's. Double up on at least #1 and #2 C4's. Get a .5! .5 C4 is a pretty clutch piece.

If anything I'd ask for the offset nuts, some more slings, a .5 C4, peenuts TCU's and tricams. In that order

You guys have this all wrong. You don't need rope as long as you have dark underwear and toilet paper. Don't want to bring TP, try depends instead. Besides, ropes and gear is for "protected" climbing, and we all know that's for wussies who don't have women or money.

You don't want gear for x-mas. I can tell that a boy of your age (I can feel your age through the inter-tubes) that you really just want a tattoo and some live in strippers. Yep, creepy uncle panda is right. Remember, there is no sex in the champagne room.

You might be saying to yourself "but I really just wanna climb all the time, I don't need tattoos or beautiful, half naked women surrounding me at every awkward pubescent moment" Well son, that's because you're wrong.

In fact, the only reason that real climbers climb in the first place is women and money. Once you have tasha and lexus following you around for a week, the money will follow. Women and money are all that matter kid. Oh, and maybe beards too.

What you need are some skinny (I'm talking mammut or madrock 10mm spectra/dynema) shoulder length slings and some lightweight beaners.

I see you found coldclimbs photo of how to make slingdraws - I personally find that is a key method, but I hate having stuff around my shoulders.

And if he climbs in rock where tricams are too fussy for the quality of placement.

Last time I checked, tricams weren't that useful in California.

Tri-cams arent all that usefull here. And I know how to climb, im just looking for suggestions on how to flesh out my rack as I mostly climb with other people, and use parts of their rack. Regarding the 3 belay devices, when you have a little brother who thinks that everything is his, then you have a reason to have one extra laying around. And as I said, we often have a TR and a lead going on at the same time, so we do use all 3 belay devises. So any more comments on what I need to flesh out my rack?

Thanks guys!

Sounds like you got the BD Trad Climber Starter Rack, Stoppers, Hexes, and C4's. Which I always considered a very good start.
Gear, more nuts would be my first choice. People suggest a different brand to complement stoppers, which is not a bad idea. But I've done fine with all BD Stoppers. Which are easiest to find. Go for seconds in 5-11 sizes, which should be easy for your folks to get. Also, the small locking biners are good for setting up anchors, BD Quicksilvers are a good choice and low priced. At least several more.
Cams, as I read it you have #5 through #.75 BD C4's. I would supplement with Metolious TCU's, Red would be my first choice, then Orange then Yellow. These may be a little more $$ than your folks are willing to shell out, I have no idea.
Runners for leading, you mentioned you had draws, do they have biners? If so, you can tie your own 10" - 12" long, tied from 36-40 pieces of webbing, and move the biners back and forth. Otherwise you'll need more free biners. 5 24" sewn runners is about what I have, but more than I use.
Also, for setting up TR's. Piles of hand tied 1" webbing are great. But really you would know best for where you climb, what lengths you need.
Hopefully some ideas that don't break the bank of Mom and Dad.
Climb Safe, Don
