Ok, Ive never been climbing where I've had to use rope other than the gym and rapelling and stuff, I usually boulder, but how does sport climbing work? DO you just tie in and anchor or buddy for belay and start climbing and clipping bolts on the way up or what? How do you get your draws off when you get up? rapell down and take them as you go? Im a bit confused? A little help?
thanks

Here's the process:

1. Have friend belay you.
2. You start climbing, when you reach a bolt, you clip with a draw and then clip rope through the draw.
3. You climb to top of route (hopefully ).
4. You reach the anchor, which is often (but not always) a chain or sling with a biner through it. This is fixed on the route, it stays. You clip that.
5. On your way down, you stop at each of your clipped draws and unclip them.
6. Reach ground.
7. "Off belay," says you.
8. You (or said friend) pulls rope through the anchor and it falls to the ground.

If you have to bail halfway up the route, you must then leave a draw on the bolt as an anchor. This isn't a good thing, you'll either have to find someone that can do the route to grab it for you or perhaps rap off the top to grab it.

Hope this helps a little.

Yes, "on belay" is key. So is tying in, it makes those falls a little more pleasant.

Also stuff like avoiding back clipping, routing the rope properly so you don't take a skull crushing upside down whipper, properly performing anchor changeovers, etc.

A good book will work ok (like 'How to Rock Climb'), but I would HIGHLY suggest you have someone who knows what they are doing show you. Messing up any of the above could land you in the hospital or worse.

Climb safe!

Or maybe, you should try to find an experienced "Sport" climber to show you how the whole "Sport" thing works...

"he sort of expalained it" Huh.

Buddy, please make sure you don't run out ON YOUR OWN (with an unexperienced belayer) and try to do it trial and error. You will possibly only get one "trial", as the "error" will get you hurt bad. I am not trying to be a prick, just watching for your safety.

Just go out with someone who is experinced. There are plenty of climbers that love to climb ALL THE TIME, and are more than willing to teach you.
