SIT STARTS... shesh i hate em and love em all at the same dang time. but most bouldering problems require a sit start to make the problem that much more interesting. but the way i see it... it was a damn SHORT person who made the problem!!! see i am about 6'4", so when i start a sit start... i am so bunched up i can't even press out with my legs! its not a strength issue either... its just that i get so wound up i hate it!!! anyone else find this problem. of course the damn midget little people (ironmask lol, tewaddle lol) can't reach the holds i can or stretch as far as me. so what i can reach and crimp the have to throw a dyno to and nail that crimp just right. but of course they have smaller hands so crimpers to them are ledges and ledges to me are freaking jugs! bahhh its a catch 22 being small or tall! tang

I'm 6'2 (but most of that is my legs) so I know what you mean. Sit starts can be impossible if they're not tuned to your height, and usually i feel too tall, but of course there's always a way (or so those frickin' optimistic buggers keep sayin'). I just hate super low sit starts off of underclings. I messed up my back for a while like that. [ This Message was edited by: kriso9tails on 2002-01-06 13:34 ]

Sit starts are a pain. I prefer standing with 2 big jugs about 3 ft apart... But they make the climbs so much more interesting and difficult so they're needed.

doesn' matter to me. just getting started, sitting or standing, is a problem. If i want to make it more challenging I'll try sit starting.

I think sit starts on the evil overhanging wall at my gym are what gave me climber's elbow I'm 5'7 and I envy the long tall people who can just effortlessly reach out and grab stuff that I have to strain for

I completly and totally love this topic. I totally agree... which is why I do them, as often as I can...I hate them, I despise the first two moves. It intails that I have to pull myself up on a smaller hold, with all my body weight, working against me...legs...I have to remember to use my legs and feet, too. I Love to hate this. T

Sure we all "wine" too much...but who was talking about alcohol?? Ok for reals, I'm 6 feet tall and think that although sit starts aren't the easiest they represent another challenge to overcome, and they give all those short people an advantage so they quit whining about those reaches that are just "too big" for somebody their size!!! woodsE

My partner is a good 6 inches taller than me and He always mocks me cause I cant reach all the same holds So I have to dyno it. I tell him that dynos are cooler anyway and that I will get more chicks cause I dyno.

I like sit starts, but I'm 5-10. I get alot of complants form fellow tall climbers who don't like the sit starts I set because they are all bunched up. So I hear where your comming from. Aulwes

Hey Geoff: I agree about sitstarts, even though I'm 5'4". I tend to do perform much better on overhang, so I should be great at them, but it just seems that an overhung sitstart can drain my energy for the whole rest of the problem, and make those topout jugs feel like microcrimps. If we go to Rocktown soon I've got an Evil sitdown start for you!!! It's called Skin Graph. peace, tim

Being tall isn't all it's cracked up to be. There are disadvantages to height (I'm 6'6" barefoot.) Taller people have more difficulty getting the center of gravity close to the rock/holds, and we're more likely to lose balance on moves, as a slight shift can cause the COG to get out of line. Although I must admit that stepping to a hold my partner makes three moves to reach does offset this disadvantage. Best, JRB

I only have that problem every now and then. I am 5'10" tall, but I have an arm-span of 6'4". Needless to say the problems that I put up are kinda hard, but following some one with shorter arms can be a pain.

I love sit starts, especially if they involve pulling your body up and flat out horizontally to balance for that next hold. If it's a two finger crimper match sit start, then it's just evil.

lol nikegirl... what can i say... been there done that its fun to mess around with. its rough for me to climb in gyms with my friends. im 6'4", the next one thats closest to my height is about 5'10" and the other one is about 5'8". they are both pretty strong and can do all sorts of sit starts. they'll do a sit start and i gotta freaking do the splits just to get my arss close enough to the dang wall. its rough but its fun when i can set a mad problem that involves one HIGH crimper that i can get tippytoe and they gotta dead spot it or dyno to it. dang small hands they have though. *sigh* gotta love to climb! tang

i like sit stats, im only 5-2 so they are fine unless you have to dyno because i have no dyno skills, i can only go about a foot. so if the sit start is to far away for me to reach i know what you mean, kind of. well not really. but if a 4 year old were to make a route i would. im sorry you hate sit starts.

So far I think I hold the record for height disadvantages. 4 foot 9 BABY. Thats dead truth. I seriously think that if I had one more hold available for me to grab, I could do at least 5.11s to 5.12s. Someday Ill be so big I can just step to the top of the route, and laugh at you. MWWAaaahahahahaha. And then I will set many records.

I guess I am kinda lucky, I am fairly short, 5'7" but I have realy long arms, I have the same arm span as a friend of mine that is 6'3" so I can crunch in to those small spaces and also get those big reaches.

hmmmm....sit starts off of a matched sloper. grrrrrr. hate 'em, hate 'em. you know where the shorties really have the advantage?! high steps...i see that 5'2" chick gingerly place her foot at waist level... anatomically speaking, my thigh is so long, i think my kneecap would have to go through my cranium to get that. oh well...trade-offs.
