Question (not hypothetical, I do not know the answer):
What, when, where, and by whom was the first 5.10 established?

Some rumors have it at Eldorado Canyon, the NORTHCUTT DIRECT START to BASTILLE CRACK, which was only called 5.9 then but is definately solid ten...I am sure some valley climbs and John Gill routes probably predated this though, so this is not a definative answer, just one of the earliest ones.

It's an interesting question and I don't know the answer.

It's sort of a hypothetical question also...before 5.10 existed a lot of stiff climbs got rated as 5.9 simply because that was the end of the scale and no one wanted to blow their own horn too much. The Valley is full of these sandbags...some of which probably have been upgraded over the years to 5.10. So was the "first" 5.10 really the first of that difficulty or simply the first promoted as 5.10.

Okay then...
Here is another ratings question.
Was the first 5.13 sport or trad?

Remember us North American climbers have blinders on to the rest of the worlds goings on...so the first question oughta be what ws the first 5.13? Grand Illusion? Phoenix? Supercrack? Who knows, but they are all TRAD!!!
