Is it possible to lower using two ropes?

How is it done?

Do you mean two ropes in series? I assume that you're concerned about passing the knot?

Here's the basic idea: Before the joining knot reaches your belay device, you need to support and unweight the rope on the tensioned side of your belay device (that is if the climber or haulbag at the other end can't easily unweight it for you). This is typically done by loading the rope onto a prussik knot. The prussik is attached to the anchor using a load-release knot (mariner or munter mule).

You back up the system by tying a slack loop of rope to the anchor, and then you can undo your belay device and put it behind the joining knot.

The last step is to undo the backup and then release the prussik from the anchor using the load release knot.

Confused?
