Yes indeed this is the Q.
Heading to Europe and...
I am looking at a 12 hr LO in LAX and will have my gear (quickdraws, rope, wife). So is this enough time to rent a car (easy) and hustle to JT send a few and get back? I have between 6am and 6 PM.
Any thoughts? Will be Sep 30th.

It certainly is possible, but you're probably not going to smell real good for the flight. I'd say, 7am to leave the airport, 10am get to J-tree, climb for 4hours and leave by 2pm. Get to LAX at 4:30pm. Board at 5:30pm....
It's possible but I think that is pushing it.

Thanks Bret, I am always pushing it. You should hear how I got to the Ditch this year! Basically I gave a rent a car to couple of strangers, but they were climbers, and it all worked out.
Yes I must find a pool or lake to jump in transit. Swiss Air must smell sweet.

If you are flying direct to Europe from LAX, be prepared for security to be a hastle (LAX is known for it)! You may get lucky, or you may not. From my experience, I would not recommend trying to check in at 4:30 to board an international flight at 5:30.

Wouldn't you have to factor in traffic? The 30th is a weekday? So you will probably hit a little bit of traffic leaving LAX and some on the way back in. Risky.

Have you ever been to JTree before onelung???
I'm guessing you haven't. Because if you had, you probably wouldn't be asking this question...
Let's say your flight into LAX is early even, and you can hustle your way through renting a car (vehicle rental agencies are off-site at LAX by the way which means you'll have to take the appropriate shuttle to the rental site). In mellow traffic, it's about a 3 hour drive out to JTree; not sure how long it would take starting in morning traffic at 0600/0700.
And let's say you arrive in the park somewhere in the neigborhood of 0930-ish. Then you have to deal with the fact that Joshua Tree N.P. is freakin' HUGE! Without knowing your way around, it may take you a bit to find specific routes. On top of that, there are relatively few bolted routes there. Not that there aren't any, but in my experience (which I'll admit is limited there), there isn't a great consolidation of them in any one area. And a lot of the bolted routes there are hard.
After you're done climbing, then you're looking at driving back into L.A. in afternoon traffic. Again, a solid 3 hour drive not taking into account any added rush-hour conjestion.
Just in driving time (minus rush-hour conjestion probs) half of your layover is already used up. Add to that the fact that you're going to need to check in for you're international flight at least an hour and a half before departure, and dropping off the rental car, you've burned a minimum of 8 hours and realistically, probably closer to 10. That leaves about 2 hours for climbing.
I guess it's do-able but for my money, more hassle than it's worth.
If you simply must hit JTree on this layover, it would certainly help your cause to enlist the help of a knowledgable Joshua Tree, CA resident/local who would be able to show you appropriate routes and maybe provide some gear for your endeavors.
Alternatively, you may have better luck doing some climbing at one of the "sport" areas closer in to LAX.

It's not gonna happen in your time frame. Especially on a Tuesday. The traffic alone both directions will kill you. You'll arrive in Josh with enough time to wave bye bye.

Blast out to Malibu Creek State park and crank on the ape wall.
it will take an hour and half to get there, 15-20 min approach, there is a decent swiming hole, the top ropes are BASIC to setup and you will get a WICKED pump.
You are golden... give yourself at least 2 hours to check into your flight.

You could definately save some time, and money, by going to the Indian Cove section of Jtree. Im pretty sure its free to get in, and there is less stuff to choose from. If you want more info just PM me.

Exactly. Driving from LAX during am rush hour through LA traffic to Joshua Tree is at least a 4 hour ordeal. Driving back through the same traffic trying to arrive at LAX around 4 or 5pm is also at least a 4 hour ordeal--and could be much worse.

Josh is a long ways from LAX.

I do think this is a good idea
You can also walk a little further past the Apes wall, to several sport lead areas.
If your time got short, you could also go to this "scruffy little urban sport crag" called "Tick Rock". It's about 30-40 minutes from LAX, 3-5 minute approch. There is about a dozen routes including a couple of new things.
If you really get hosed, there is a gym about 10 minutes away from LAX.

I was just there this last weekend. Not too bad... mid-90's I think, but it was really pleasant with a breeze up on the rocks until about 2pm. Maybe I got lucky.
Yeah, if you go there, make sure you venture back into the canyon. Ape Wall is fun, but there is much more to see there. Honestly though, however not practically, I live in the area and would still almost prefer the entire drive to J-tree just to climb Headstone Rock. I love that place!
