Hello.

In the online climbing dictionary, the definition for "Arete" is:

In reply to:
A narrow ridge, or corner, of rock or snow. Derived from the french word for "stop".

The second sentence doesn't seem right...

The english word "arete" is derived from the french word "arête" (one "r", a circumflex accent on the "e"), which means "sharp ridge" or "edge". "Arrêt" (two "r", an accent) is a different word and is the noun used to describe a stop, a pause, a halt, etc.
