Hi, I'm relocating to Iceland, and am tossing up what rock gear to bring. I've been led to believe in the past, that outdoor trad is basically a crapshoot, and there's not much outdoor sport even, with the bulk of the action being mixed/alpine/ice stuff. How true is this? Is it worth bringing anything besides a harness, helmet and shoes? I've got a full aid rack, but I imagine that most of it is going to end up in a box here for the duration. Cheers, Karl P

Have you browsed through the rock and ice climbing links on this page? http://www.fjallamennska.is/english.php Will you be in Rvik? There are small bolted and trad-only crags in the vicinity, and allegedly better sport climbing 4 hours to the SE. Other cliffs here and there, and perhaps better mountaineering potential. The winter ice I've seen can be extensive (cliffs and waterfalls are everywhere) when it's in, but also hard to predict. Not a climbing destination, but one of my favorite places to visit anyway.
