On an interesting historical note, when a British expedition wanted to climb Kangchenjung in 1955, the Sikkimese, Indian and Nepali gov'ts asked the climbers to call off their trip for fear of incurring the wrath of the diety of the mountain. The British struck a deal in which they agreed to stop short of the summit to avoid descrating the seat of the god himself...they kept their word and the highest snows of the mountain have been untouched by human feet to this day. Paraphased from Edwin Bernbaum's Sacred Mountains of the World, required reading for anyone interested in mountains, mythology/spirituality and phenomenal photography.
