Ian, good call when you said; "Just be careful what you tell them, because they'll never understand some things if they're not climbers themselves"

My parents weren't to keen on my cliff climbing in Cornwall to, but once they saw my anchor I was secured to and the weight the gear could hold they were convinced that it's very safe. What I mean is: Show your parents how it works and how safe it is and they're normally convinced. Good luck

first of all my mom doesnt like it too much either. second of all i think it is a parents responsibility to worry a little at least because they care about you. you should even worry (an do) becaus u know the saftey precautions and what-not. but u control it and u like it...its part of the thrill. even if your parents are 100% behind u and like it they still worry b/c the love you. just a thought

I have been climbing for awhile now, and I am now a parent too. THat said, parents will always worry, and now I know. My parents and I have come to a simple, yet effective, conclusion. I don't tell them I am climbing when I leave, only when I come back.

some of you guys could try getting in a car crash on the way to the crags, with bonus points for bad injuries. it would make the climbing seem pretty mellow and safe to your parents

In reply to: My mother recently told me she wasn't looking forward to my funeral. Well that makes two of us I guess. My grandmother didn't mind that I climbed, she just didn't ever want me to go to Zion, it was the one place she feared. Zion is such a bad ass place to climb, that is my second favorite spot to climb besides Bavaria Germany.

My mother is always worrying about me climbing. However we always reassure her that we are safe. The one bad thing though is that when we told her that we would be climbing all summer long she has a sh#tfit and told us we had to work or we would get no money for college. After saving up and expecting this trip, which we told her, we finally came to an understanding. Me and my brother had to pay for our medical insurance for the months we were climbing, this is like 600$ each, however it made her happy. Though I imagine shes still worried, anyways good luck.

As a Kid who climbed and now a parent I have these valuable words of wisdom: just tell them youd rather get high on climbing than crack..... take them up to show them how competent you are, scare the shit out of them in a place you are very comfortable in (but for god sakes dont let them get hurt).... Show them climbing mags from the 80's with everyone in bright lycra and explain that these are your new role models.... Explain how climbers use a poop tube....

My parents are happy, they love climbing compared to my motorcycle riding. Plus they get cool pictures to show off to their friends

you could always lie and tell her you're going hiking. not the most honorable thing, in the typical sense of the word, but neither is making your mother worry herself to death. hell, my dad never told me to be careful until i started climbing, when i was 22.

If you are taught right and continue to learn from experienced climbers you will always be safe. Tell mom it's either climbing or you sit in the basement until you are 35 playing GTA San Andreas. Her Choice. See you out climbing!
