Falling rocks, what do you yell?

So, I have always yelled "rock" when bits of rock fall off a climb I am on, but I heard in a thread that someone yelled "below". This seems uncomfortibly close to "beley" to me. On a windy day or if you are much higher up then your beleyer this could make for a very bad miscomunication...

I was wondering what other people yell when rocks fall.

You should ONLY yell "rock" anything else like stated before could cause someone to look up and get really messed up. I'd rather it hit my helmet than my face.

P.K.

once again...if someone just yelled fuck or shit, I would look up to see what was goin on...it wouldn't occur to me that something was hurtling at my face. If something falls, always yell rock, and nothing else.

In the UK, it was always "below!" when I was a lad. Dunno if it still is.

Now I use "rock".

Seems to make more sense to me than "below".

ROCK, doesn't matter what actually falls, rock, gear, etc. Exception being when you toss a rope then yell ROPE.

In Britain, the universal shout is 'Below'. This applies to any plumetting object, be it rock, gear, pipe, picnic hamper etc. If you are throwing down a rope, typically you would shout 'Rope below' a few seconds before doing so.

Cheers,

Nick

There was that one time that all I could get out was "Ock", but "Rock" is the preferred warning...

"ROCK!!!" is so simple... I occasionally change it up by saying "pebble" if it is so small my partner would barely feel it. But the intensity with which I use usually dictates the severity and size of the rock. I yelled rock many many times to an old partner and he was quite shocked one time when I screamed it with such intensity, that he moved rather quickly behind a flake in time to see a refrigerator size boulder go by. He said he had never heard me sound so scared.

Hmm, so in US and Canada it's ROCK (well actually ROCK, EH! in Canada and RAHK in NE US  ) and in the UK and Ireland it's BELOW. What is it in Australia and NZ?

Damn right. (In America) The word is rock, not "fucking rock," "oh shit, rock," "big rock," or any combination of rock and any other word. Just ROCK... as loud as you can... over and over again if necessary.

I'll add that when you're the person below and someone above yells rock, you don't run and you don't look up. You stand still and scrunch under your helmet, or cover your head with your arms if you aren't wearing one.

I've been on a few adventures where this would be a bad idea. Little trav-dawg was told to move once, so he moved, but when the (BIG) rock came down, it bounced and headed straight for him. I didn't know he could move so fast.

Once in the BSF a friend and I were climbing and we heard a sound of rumbling and breaking trees. I think if one like that comes off you'd better be moving.

Just don't run down hill, or away from the wall, that's the way the rocks usually go.

You really do need to be paying attention though, because sometimes, even a rock or chunk of wood tossed in a seemingly safe direction gets a notion that there is a target below and magically caroms and then homes in on the only human in the area.

I have one friend who says, "Headache.", when he drops anything.

Seriously, it's a good idea to let the second dispose of the big stuff, and make sure that nobody else is below before you do. But some things need to go right then, because a controlled droop is way better than a suprize drop. Whoever is on the ground MUST pay attention.

Some of These ideas are only applicable to developing routes in isolation. At a popular crag where others would be at risk, the rules are different. If you are not certain that it is safe to drop stuff, don't drop stuff.

Out on the ice it's funny to hear "ICE!". I continue to yell "ROCK!" If any thing falls its a rock and should be treated as such. The first time I heard ICE I thought, "yep it sure is."
