Hey,

I'm thinking about going to kalymnos in april. Does anyone know if it's easy to meet climbing partners on the island; is there a relaxed atmosphere and are there going to be many climbers in April?

Thanks,
Frendy

I have no idea what the place will be like in April. I spent a week there in October and it was a totally relaxed climbing atmosphere. You are smart going before the summer and the heat and crowds. There should be people to climb with. THere is a climbers bar and there should be people looking for partners there.

I was there in late October/early November last year. There is a very relaxed atmosphere on the island and some of the friendliest locals you'll ever meet. I stayed at Saki's Studios and the room/apartment was clean, really cheap, on the water and with a balcony view to die for. Saki even picked us up from the ferry at 4 am! There is a tourist information booth in town to make reservations for you for the ferry home and help you with local transit and telephone issues.

The local climber's bar is owned by a couple of Brits who were fabulous. They even tracked down the ingredients to bake a chocolate cake for my boyfriends birthday. There are tons of climbers around and the popular crags are all within walking distance of the town. I don't think you should have a problem finding partners as there are boards where you can leave notes at both the climber's bar (Glaros?) and the climbing shop in town.

Oh ya - the food is also amazing. Kalymnos is truly an island paradise for climbers. I highly recommend going! PM me if you want more details.

I was there in mid-October and alone, and it was very difficult to find a partner. I had no rope, just to increase the problem... Many people, when asked, just refused to climb with me, especially my French co-citizens... The Brits and Germans were the most friendly IMO.
Kalymnos is a quiet island, except the harbor itself which is very busy and extremely noisy : don't hesitate to sleep in the small villages of the west coast, not in the harbour like I did...
I'm just afraid that the water is gonna be a bit cold in April.
Have fun there, the limestone is excellent!

Hi Frendy,

Small World!!!! Kalymnos is exactly like Railey: lots of climbers, lots of tufa, lots of bars, and as an extra: lots of motorbikes. You should have no problem meeting people. Unfortunately I have to work. How you can go galvinating for ever in Thailand and as soon as you are back home, go off to Kalymnos is a riddle to me. But HAVE FUN!!!

Greetings
Karin

Thanks for the info everyone, sounds pretty good!

Karin: Small world indeed, you told me exactly what I was hoping for, the world needs more Ray-Leh's. But be comforted I won't be bumming around there for months; just a few weeks, plastic is kinda getting boring!

greetz,
Frendy

I would not count on meeting people in April. Even getting a room could be tricky...Kalymnos has none of the touristic crap you get in nearby Kos...
If you can wait until the last week of Aril when the Greek Eastern kicks in, the place will be full of Greek climbers going there to climb for holidays...
