I'm trying to plan a trip with 4 buddies this summer -- climbing, mountain biking, & camping. only two of us climb (almost exclusively in the SE) and the other two live in CA (they're down with climbing, but have only climbed a few times). I'd obviously like to do some climbing out west, so that is our planned destination...but that's pretty vague ;-)

Where can we go that has decent trails for riding, good camping, a good mix of sport routes in the 5.8 - 5.11 range, and won't be 120 degrees in July/August? Also, I'd like to go somewhere fairly remote (read:uncrowded), and wouldn't mind a long hike/ride in, carrying our climbing and camping gear with us.

I'd appreciate any ideas ya'll have...especially if you've done a trip like this before and could offer some logisitcal advice. also, any other online resources would be great...

Lake Tahoe has what your looking for except for the crowds. But there is plenty of National Forest land around for getting away.
Good Trails - The Flume, Mr. Toads Wild Ride, Best Little Downhill West of the Pecos, Powerline area.
Good Climbing - Donner, Eagle Lake Canyon, Big Chief, Lovers Leap
Good Camping - Desolation (crowded but very beautifull), Mokelumne Wilderness
Good Beer and Wings - Dixons in South Lake

Check out Central Oregon... Smith is world-class, but has lots of fun easy stuff for beginners. It can be hot in the summer, and crowded on the weekends, but Smith is so big that you can easily avoid both. Bend has AWESOME mountain biking, and camping options around there are plentiful.

Some CA options:

Mammoth area, but the mountain biking is only really good if you're comfortable on looser surfaces. Tahoe is better for biking. Totally laid back free camping near/at about half of the many areas with sport routes (Clark Canyon, Dike Wall, Bear Crag, Rock Creek, Pine Creek, Benton Crags, Tuolumne/Yosemite, Sagehen Summit, Little Egypt, etc - and Owens River Gorge if a cold spell hits or you get up wicked early). Good access to town.

Courtright Reservoir area (8000' elevation, south of Yosemite, north of the Needles) fits the bill especially if you're looking for more remote, normally a bit hot in August, but this year it'll probably be just right in July/Aug time frame. Bit crowded with non-climbers on the weekends (especially 4x4 crowd), totally deserted on weekdays, few climbers ever. Mountain biking is great on the hard-core 4x4 'roads' - one of which just goes straight up the side of a granite dome (!). Some steep sport on featured granite, but more slabby stuff then steep. No towns/services nearby.

If staying away from crowds is your number one priority, there are many other options around the Sierra, but they'll tend to sacrifice on the good (or any) 5.8-11 sport climbs side of things (lots more options if you have trad gear).
