I really think that happend to everyone once a while. No need to freak out. There recently was a bigger discussion about the chances of backclipping leading to unclipping in which was sound reasonably stated that the dangers are often overestimated (besides this was a flamewar par exellance, have fun!).

Nonetheless I'm close to anal about it. The only conclusion I draw of the discussion is not to risk a whipper for correcting myself. Seems not worth it.

How bad it is depends on a number of factors. Which way does the draw twist? What's the angle of the wall? Where is the climber relative to the draw when he/she falls? And more. Rather than answering these questions, though, best to just avoid it. :D

just to let you know that people do get hurt doing this i had a old friend from high school that broke his back when he back clipped and fell unclipped from the draw and took a nasty wipper at a bad angle, he was lucky he is not paralyzed and only had to be in a body cast, this is a really easy thing to prevent so just try and get in to the habit of checking, but i would not worry to much if you only do it once.

Try climbing lower grades on which you're less likely to fall or dummy leading until you get used to it. I back clipped a few when i was learning but i pretty much got it now so i dont worry about it, just practice

...dummy leading...

 Damn, that sounds so much cooler than "mock leading." I'm calling it dummy leading from now on.

All I need to remember from backclipping it that I want my finger to point to the wall when I clip.

Now that's dummy leading.
