Any idea who first made that famous remark, "All the great climbers are killed on rappel" ? Extensive searching on the web returns no hints...

Peter Boardman, in "The Shining Mountain" (p. 84 in my edition) wrote, "The big swing from the foot of the icefield, past the Guillotine, down a rope with an awkward knot half way, brought my senses back. 'Tous les grandes chefs sont tues en rappels.' All the greatest climbers are killed abseiling! The phrase had been in the very first book on mountaineering techniques I had read when I was fourteen years old."

Thanks,

Matthew W.
