It was the 4th issue and the first one I've seen. It's a new magazine titled Urban Climber. Have others heard of this new journal? What do you think of it? I first thought it would be about buildering and available climbing around urban areas such as L.A., Boulder, Denver, Salt Lake, Las Vegas, Twin Cities, etc. But no. It was mostly about gym climbing. Now, I understand that people, especially those in the mid-west, use gyms to train. But a magazine centered around the gym and the gym climber? I don't know about that . . . it just doesn't seem right. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't sit right in Mowz's stomach.

i accidentally got a copy b/c they were supposed to be featuring atlanta in it. apparently i was one issue early or something but it was a huge piece of shit. i understand there are a ton of people who do exactly what that magazine is trying to capture but i don't think they're the type to buy a magazine about it? i could be wrong, but i didn't even try to get the one in which they featured atlanta since it was such trash.... at first i thought i was missing something, like it was a big joke maybe but i slowly realized it was serious. then i vomited all over myself when i saw the fashion/modelling spread.

Ditto. The stuff that didn't sit right in Mowz's stomach wanted to ride the elevator up as well. What the Hell is wrong with the people who thought of such junk? Please, if you work on the magazine, stop printing, and shut down the project; you can save trees, stop wasting paper, save egos, stop delicious, half-digested dinners from taking the elevator up, and save yourselves. BTW, I picked up an issue of Gripped today. I like it! I believe it's much better than R&I and Climbing; one thing that is missing is the advertisements; thank God.

yo, if you took the adverts out of R&I and Climbing you'd be left with the letters to the editor and (at least in the case of climbing) a shitty crossword puzzle.

In reply to: then i vomited all over myself when i saw the fashion/modelling spread. definetly agree with that. honestly, fashion? most of the climbers i know are lucky to be seen with two items of clothing on: a harness, and some sort of fabric covering the personal areas. but if you're an "urban climber", naturally, you wear prana capris/beanies and carry a crashpad downtown. its a key element to the whole look.

It's less like a rag and more like an awesome book that comes out 4 times a year. I don't know, I guess I feel you get what you pay for.

"Urban Climber" is largely B.S., as stated above, but there was a good article on Boone Speed a couple months ago. It is not exclusively focused upon the gym climber, but more upon the sporto-boulderer who feels alienated from the heavily alpine-grade IV and up stuff in the two big mags. All of these mags are way too focused on celebrity worship, though. lame. My idea of the ultimate climbing magazine would be one whose main focus is new local crags across the nation and the world, and about the local everyday hardmen who develop them, with great photography. This would stay way fresher than another damned yosemite cover story or a hot flash about the latest 19 year old who happens to have really strong fingers..

A google of "urban climber" will produce their web site. Looks pretty cheesy. Camhead seems to like it.

You can't possibly be referring to Climbing or R&I, can you? Because, hell, that's where I get my fix for hearing about so-and-so's latest heinous V16 or third-attempt onsight with pre-placed draws 5.18. And, truth be told, my mags soon get sticky pages when I jack off to the latest results from the Buttfuck, Ohio, bouldering comp with guest dj imaposeur who spun the tunes to the wee hours of the evening, sponsored by Prana and Madrock.

Had I subscribed to this mag, I surely would have been inspired to climb the red and blue route--left wall and features off--in the gym last night. If only I could dream that big.

I'm looking forward to "Rural Climber" the rag that spotlights the not-so-fashionable. :D

Mowz, everytime I see this thread or your signature I laugh my ass off. My Battalion commander is such a tool and he says "meh". So now everyone in the Battalion is running around camp imitating his "meh" even going so far as to imitate it over the battalion radio. He has still yet to catch on. Doobie

Whoever described what they would like in a magazine, that's what Gripped has. Travel stories of good places to go, features on local good climbers. It's a good mag. Good photos, good layout, good writing. Love the Rural Climber (or whatever you called it cover). There was an article last year in Gripped about those hardmen from Saskatchewan who train on their farm there. It was awesome. This other group of climbers went to the farm to train with them. It was hilarious.
